Maester Cressen is the maester of Dragonstone. As maester he is the advisor of Stannis Baratheon.

Appearance
At nearly eighty years old, he is frail with a bad hip, causing him to have trouble walking. He has wrinkly, thin skin and trembling hands.

History
Maester Cressen used to be maester of Storm's End. When Lord Steffon Baratheon and his wife died in a shipwreck, he more or less raised the Baratheon children. Stannis was his favourite as he needed Cressen more because he lacked the charm of his brothers. Cressen came to regard Stannis as the son he never had. During the Siege of Storm's End some men of the garrison tried to open the gate. Stannis had wanted to place them on the catapults and send them to the enemy but Cressen advised against it. He pointed out that they did not have much food and that hunger might force them to eat the prisoners.

When Robert gave Dragonstone to Stannis, Maester Cressen followed him to the ancient stronghold. As a Maester is sworn to advise and serve a specific castle, regardless of changes in control of that holding, this is very uncommon.

Some time before the War of the Five Kings Stannis asked for the Citadel to send him a replacement for Cressen as he began to age. The Citadel sent him Pylos.

It is implied that Maester Cressen worked with Walgrave in the past.aFfC
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
After Stannis declares himself king he sends out messengers to get support for his claim. He is not very successful. Only the vassals of Dragonstone support him. The lords of the Stormlands support Stannis' younger brother Renly Baratheon who has claimed the throne as well.

Maester Cressen advises Stannis to ally with the Starks and the Arryns. Stannis says that those crowning Robb Stark are committing treason. Stannis's queen, Lady Selyse, urges Stannis to rely solely on R'hllor and says that according to Melisandre, Renly will die soon. Maester Cressen thinks that Selyse suggested that Stannis have Renly assassinated and is shocked because Stannis seems to listen to this advice. He blames Melisandre for this and plans to kill her.

At dinner he poisons her wine. Melisandre seems to sense this and suggests to Maester Cressen to throw the wine away but Cressen insists that they share the cup. Melisandre drinks half but is unaffected. Maester Cressen drinks the other half and dies.
Ser Dontos Hollard is a knight serving at the court of King's Landing. He is usually drunk.

History
Dontos was the only surviving member of House Hollard. House Hollard was close ally and vassal of House Darklyn. As a result of the Defiance of Duskendale, both houses were destroyed and their blood exterminated. Only young Dontos was spared because Ser Barristan Selmy asked for clemency. As Selmy had rescued the king during the Defiance, Aerys granted his wish.

Young Dontos was taken to King's Landing to serve as a squire. He never returned to Duskendale.

A Clash of Kings
Intending to ride in the Tourney for King Joffrey's 13th Name Day, Ser Dontos got too drunk, arriving in the lists unarmored and hardly clothed. King Joffrey took this as a personal insult and commanded that Ser Dontos be put to death. However, the pleading of Sansa Stark saved his life and Ser Dontos was striped of his knighthood and made a fool in motley instead.

After secretly being contacted by Petyr Baelish, Dontos left Sansa a note and promised to help her escape. Drawing inspiration from the tales of Florian, he pleads to serve her and asks for patience for they can only escape at the right time.

A Storm of Swords
Several meetings in the Godswood later, Sansa tells Ser Dontos of the plot to marry her to Willas Tyrell, Dontos tells Sansa that she would be freed the night of Joffrey's wedding and gives her a hairnet laced with amethysts. On the appointed night, Ser Dontos attended the marriage of Sansa to Tyrion Lannister, where he was used as a footstool by Tyrion when he went to place his cloak around the shoulders of Sansa. After the death of King Joffrey - poisoned with one of the amethysts, actually the Strangler, of Sansa's hairnet - at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, Dontos takes Sansa away.

Ser Dontos escaped the Red Keep with Sansa and delivered her to Petyr Baelish, who had been waiting for them on a ship in Blackwater Bay. Once Sansa had been delivered, Petyr then had Ser Dontos killed, burying the secret with the drunkard.

Craster is a wildling, master of Craster's Keep, located beyond the Wall. Despite his unsavory reputation, he was regarded as friend to the Night's Watch.

Character and Appearance
Once a powerful-looking man, he is nearing the end of his life. His hair is grey turning to white. He has a flat nose and a drooping mouth, which gives him a cruel look and one of his ears is missing, which he has lost to the cold.aCoK

Craster was one of the few wildlings not openly hostile to the Night's Watch. Although he showed the Watch no malice and offered sanctuary to those north of the Wall on rangings, he was regarded as a tenuous ally at best. This is due to his incestuous relationships with his daughter-wives and suspicions of kinslaying, sacrificing his male children.aCoK

History
Craster's father was a man of the Night's Watch and his mother was a wildling woman from the village of Whitetree. His father abandoned his mother after Craster was conceived, and when his mother tried to bring him to Castle Black, she was chased off by members of the Watch. Although the father's name is never mentioned, the name given to his son sounds very like Stark.aSoS

Craster had a keep in the Far North, where he lived with his nineteen wives, many of whom were his own daughters, including Gilly,Dyah, Ferny, and Nella as any sons he had were sacrificed.

Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Craster begrudgingly allowed the Night's Watch to stay at his keep overnight during their ranging beyond the Wall. He provided Lord Commander Mormont with the missing information on the location of Mance Rayder, he also claimed not to have seen Benjen Stark for three years. Craster was offered escort south to the Wall, but refused.aCoK

A Storm of Swords
Following the Battle of the Fist of the First Men, Craster allowed the survivors of the attack, to stay overnight at his keep. This time, several members of the Watch, already mutinous, believed that Craster was holding back of food and aid to the men, During the farwell feast he gave for a mutiny erupted during which both Craster and Lord Commander Mormont were killed. Craster was killed by Dirk.aSoS

According to the prophecy recounted by Melisandre, after a long summer, Azor Ahai will be reborn amidst smoke and salt wielding the flaming sword Lightbringer to defend the world from R'hollor's nemesis, the Other. While Melisandre is certain Stannis Baratheon is Azor Ahai, others are not so sure.

It seems very possible Dragonstone is the place Azor Ahai will be reborn as it is a volcanic island, thus providing both smoke from the mountain and salt from the sea.

Stannis Baratheon
* According to Melisandre, Stannis is Azor Ahai reborn.
* Stannis wields a magic sword that was forged by plunging a sword through a statue of the maiden at the sept at Dragonstone. This ceremony is meant to be his 'rebirth' as Azor Ahai.aCoK
* Stannis was named the Prince of Dragonstone after Roberts Rebellion, Dragonstone being of smoke and salt.
* Maester Aemon remarks that Stannis's sword, while shining brilliantly, gives off no heat and so could not possibly be Lightbringer.

Daenerys Targaryen
* After Sam tells Maester Aemon of the rumors about Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons, Aemon thinks Daenerys could be the prophesied leader.aFfC
* The prophecy was originally written in Valyrian, and the Valyrian word for prince is gender-neutral, meaning Azor Ahai reborn may not necessarily be a man.
* Daenerys was born on Dragonstone during a mighty storm.
* Daenerys seems mostly invulnerable to fire, which would likely mean she could wield a flaming sword without injuring herself.
* She hatched three petrified dragon's eggs, meaning she at least has some command of old Valyrian blood magic.

Jon Snow
* Jon's wounds smoke while Bowen Marsh cries, providing the prophecised salt, and Ser Patrek's bloody, star laden heraldry is in the air above.
* When Melisandre looks into her fires for Azor Ahai, she sees only snow, a possible connection to Jon.
* Jon has a dream where he fights the Others with a red sword burning in his hand.
* If having the Blood of the Dragon is a prerequisite, if Jon's father is truly Rhaegar, Jon would satisfy that prerequisite.

Victarion Greyjoy
* While traveling to capture Daenerys, Victarion's likely mortal sword wound is healed by Moqorro, a red priest of R'hllor. Afterward, his arm resembles roast pig and visibly smokes.
* The ritual was performed at sea, which provides the salt. Victarion's arm smokes afterward, which provides the smoke.
Victarion was saved from death, which could be considered a form of rebirth.
* Moqorro says he sees a great future for Victarion in the service to R'hllor.
* Victarion previously beat his wife to death, which is a possible Nissa Nissa connection.

Aegon VI Targaryen
* Before his death, Rhaegar believed his son to be the Prince that was Promised.aFfC

Rhaegar Targaryen
* In his youth, Rhaegar thought he might be Azor Ahai. At the time, Maester Aemon thought the same.aFfC If this is true, Robert Baratheon doomed all of Westeros when he killed Rhaegar.
There are many still unanswered questions in a Song of Ice and Fire. Here we try to piece together answers from what we already know.

Parentage
Brienne of Tarth
It is theorized that Brienne of Tarth is a descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall.

Jon Snow
It remains unclear who Jon Snow's mother is, and possibly even if Eddard Stark is in fact his father.

True Identities
Alleras the Sphinx
It seems very likely that the novice Alleras is actually Sarella Sand, one of Oberyn Martell's illegitimate daughters.

Azor Ahai
Melisandre claims Stannis Baratheon with his magic sword is Azor Ahai come again, the prince who was promised. Maester Aemon remarks that his magic sword bears no heat though Lightbringer is supposed to be warm to behold and so believes someone else to be the prince who was promised.

Coldhands
While it seems clear Coldhands was, in life, a member of the Night's Watch, it's unclear who exactly he was.

Robert Strong
Little is known of Robert Strong, but evidence suggests he is either Ser Gregor Clegane, or a kind of Frankenstein's Monster created from Clegane's corpse.

The Sailor's Wife
It's possible the Sailor's Wife is actually Tysha, Tyrion Lannister's first wife.

The Three-Eyed Crow
Evidence seems to point to Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers to being the true identity of the Three-Eyed Crow.

Unexplained Murders
Balon Greyjoy
The people of Westeros are willing to believe Balon was simply swept off a bridge into the sea, but this may not be what truly happened.

Rhaegar, Symond and Jared Frey
It seems likely that Lord Manderly murdered three Freys and had them baked into the pies he presented at Ramsay Bolton's wedding feast.

Whereabouts
Jaqen H'ghar
Tracking a man who can change his identity at will is a bit difficult, but not impossible.
Jeyne is hidden for quite some time before being used by Tywin Lannister as an imposter of Arya Stark to help solidify the North. It is unclear where she was held all that time.
Jeyne is hidden for quite some time before being used by Tywin Lannister as an imposter of Arya Stark to help solidify the North. It is unclear where she was held all that time.
Conflicting descriptions by Catelyn Stark and Jaime Lannister suggest perhaps Jeyne Westerling has an imposter.

Given Euron's timely entrance soon after Balon's fatal accident, and Euron's lack of morals, it could be that Euron somehow had his brother Balon murdered.

One might argue King Stannis Baratheon murdered Balon Greyjoy along with Robb Stark and Joffrey Baratheon when he burned leeches filled with king's blood in an attempt to magically ensure their deaths. Robb was soon murdered by the Freys and Jeoffrey by Littlefinger. Assuming this ritual had its intended effect, it obviously doesn't directly or inexplicably kill its victims but perhaps provides a twist of fate that will ensure their death by some other means. It would then seem out of place for Balon to suddenly die by a fluke accident. It is more likely that he was murdered, just like the other two targets of the spell.

Supporting Evidence
* Euron Greyjoy has knowledge of the eastern cities and it's possible he hired a Faceless Man to kill his brother for him. The Faceless Man specialize in murders that look like accidents.
* Euron should've been months away from Pyke, but shows up very shortly after Balon's death, the very brother and king who exiled him. This suggests he was expecting his brother would die.

Questions
* If Euron hired a Faceless Man, how did he pay for it? The cost is commensurate with the target, and Balon Greyjoy is a king, more or less, so this would be very expensive, possibly costing years of plunder. However, at the Kingsmoot, Euron shows up with huge amounts of treasure and a magical Hellhorn to boot. It doesn't seem to add up.
Braavos
2012-02-02T21:25:15Z

Zephyrtr: /* Additional Description */

Braavos is the greatest and most powerful of the Free Cities, located in a lagoon on the northwestern end of Essos, where the narrow sea and the Shivering Sea meet.aCoK There is a stretch of land to the southwest called the Braavosian Coastland that is claimed by Braavos. The ruler of Braavos is known as the Sealord and it is from the sea the city’s power and wealth flows.

History
Unlike the other Free Cities, Braavos was never part of the Valyrian Freehold, but was instead founded 500 years before Aegon's Landing by refugees fleeing Valyrian expansion. They were led by the Moonsingers, who found the lagoon in an effort to find a place that the Valyrian dragons could not find them.aFfC For centuries it was called the Secret City and remained relatively unknown to the rest of the world. It became publicly revealed after the Doom of Valyria, roughly 400 years after its founding. The city is sometimes called the Bastard Son of Valyria.aFfC

City
The city sprawls across a hundred islands in a vast lagoon.aGoT The nearby mainland is mostly marshland, whilst the seaward sides of the city are protected by tall, mountainous islands which form a semi-circle around the city. There is only one channel large and deep enough to accommodate ocean-going ships. This channel is defended by a massive statue called the Titan of Braavos, which serves as landmark, lighthouse and defensive fortification. Just beyond the Titan lies the citadel and the vast shipyard called the Arsenal. The city proper lies beyond, a great sprawl of domes and towers and bridges in hues of grey, gold, and red.aFfC

The city itself consists a hundred islands linked together by small stone bridges spanning the many canals throughout the city. There are no trees to be found within the city, making Braavos a city of stone architecture and granite monuments. The streets are lined with houses made of grey stone, built so close that they lean upon one another. Some houses are built above waterways. They are usually four to five stories tall slim houses with peaked tile roofs. Above the houses and canals there is an aqueduct, called the sweetwater river, that brings fresh water from the mainland as the water from the lagoon is brackish and briny and unfit for drinking.aFfC

The city is served by two main harbors. The Purple Harbor, in the north, used by the locals only and the Ragman's Harbor in the west is were foreign ships are mooring, Braavosi. All ships have to submit to inspection from Sealord's customs officers at the Chequy Port. Scattered throughout the city were small wharves and landings for the fishermen and ferries.aFfC

All gods are honored in Braavos, most of the temples are located on the isle in the center of the city, known as the 'Isle of the Gods'. Among them are the Temple of the Moonsingers who led the original Braavosi refugees to the islands, Another temple of note is the temple to the Father of Waters is rebuilt whenever he takes a new bride, as well as Temple to the Many-Faced God, Temples of R'hllor, sept for the Seven, named the Sept-Beyond-the-Sea and even gods that have no more followers are honored in a temple called the Warrens.aFfC

The Drowned Town is an area of Braavos where the town has fallen into the lagoon and only the domes and towers of the old buildings are visible above the surface of the water.aFfC

Below the Drowned Town, there is a series of wharves. Among the areas where one can pause in Braavos is the Moon Pool. The bravos usually duel at the Moon Pool by night.aFfC Healers for hire are found at the House of the Red Hands. The best inns and brothels lie near the Purple Harbor or the Moon Pool. Nearer to the Ragman's Harbor, one can find the Inn of the Green Eel, the Black Bargeman, Moroggo's, the Outcast Inn, the House of Seven Lamps and the brothel called the Cattery. Beneath the second arch of Nabbo's Bridge lies the Foghouse, a small, cramped, dirty establishment with space barely large enough to fit ten people. Among other establishments are the Mummer's Ship and the Happy Port.aFfC There are eel fights in the Spotted Cellar, which lies near the gates to the Drowned Town.aFfC

Statues of former Sealords stand along the main canal. They mostly wore long bronze robes and hold various items in their hands, books, daggers and hammers for example. One holds a golden star and another was upending a stone flagon from which water flowed.aFfC

A broad waterway known as the Long Canal. leads south to the fishmarket. Along the Long Canal sits the Palace of Truth, a building with green copper domes. The tall square towers of the Prestayns and the Antaryons also sit along the canal. After those towers, one must pass beneath the large grey aqueduct of the sweetwater river that demarcates the beginning of the district known as the Silty Town. In the Silty Town, the buildings are smaller and less grand. The Long Canal is a main thoroughfare that is usually full of barge and serpent boat traffic.aFfC

Additional Description
;Aqueducts
Towards or beyond the heart of the city, is a massive aqueduct like a grey stone roadway supported by three tiers of arches traveling southwards. It looms above the canals and houses. Called the Sweetwater River, it brings fresh water from the mainland across the mudflats and the briny shallows. Rich men pipe it directly into their homes, while commoners fill buckets at public fountains. The water from the canals is not drinkable without safely boiling it.aFfC

;Harbors
* Purple Harbor, serves only the locals, it's located on the north side of Braavos, beneath the domes and towers of the Sealord's Palace.aFfC
* Ragman's Harbor, is open to all foreign ships. It's located in the west. it is poorer, dirtier, and and noisier than the Purple Harbor.aFfCMany people make their living around Ragman's Harbor, including porters, mummers, ropemakers, sailmenders, taverners, brewers, bakers, beggars, and whores.
* Chequy Port, is where the Sealord's customs officers board merchant galleys to inspect their holds. The inspection can take as much as half a day.aFfC

;Isle of the Gods
* House of Black and White, temple to the Many-Faced God and the headquarters of the Faceless Men.
* Moonsingers Temple, is the largest and most popular temple, built of white marble capped with a silvered dome and milk glass windows that show all the phases of the moon. A pair of marble maidens flank their gates.
* Temple of R'hllor, is made of red stone. It has a great square tower with a fire in an iron brazier twenty feet across located atop it. Each door is flanked by a fire.

Culture
Braavos has a seafaring trade culture, Braavosi ships paint their hulls purple and their merchant ships sail to many distant lands and bring their trade and wealth back home.aFfC Braavos has many moneylenders and the Iron Bank of Braavos lends money to foreign nations, including the Seven Kingdoms.aGoT The city is also renown for its courtesans, which are famed throughout the world. Every courtesan has her own barge and servants to work them. Every courtesan is very beautiful of which the singers sing of. They are showered with gifts from goldsmiths and craftsmen beg for their custom. Nobility and rich merchants pay the courtesans large amounts of money to appear alongside them at events, and bravos are known to kill each other in their names.aFfC

Braavosi culture has created a unique form of sword fighting, called Water Dancing. The style is a refined form of fencing in which the practitioner stands sideways and wields a slender blade. Pugnacious bravos fill the city, frequently dueling to display their skill.

Bravos dress in flashy colors while the very rich and powerful dress in clothes that blues that are almost black and blacks.aFfC Officials of Braavos, called keyholders and justiciars, wear drab coats of brown or grey.

In the Braavosi lagoon water is a plethora of fish and shellfish which constitute the main diet of the Braavosi. their islands are devoid of trees, Firewood is brought in by barge, while pines on the islands surrounding the city are left to act as windbreaks and are illegal to cut down.aFfC
Bastardy
2012-02-02T21:00:15Z

Zephyrtr: /* Surnames */

A bastard is a person whose parents, at the time of their birth, were not married to each other. As a polite way of referring to someone who is bastard-born, someone may be referred to as a 'natural son' or 'natural daughter.' A less polite term is 'baseborn.' A euphemism for being bastard-born is 'being born on the wrong side of the sheets.'

Family Life and Status
In the series, it is not unexpected for noblemen to have bastard children, however, it is not typical for a noble to bring his bastards home and raise them with his own children. It's more usually expected that he will see to the child's well-being to some degree.aGoT A nobly born wife has the right to take insult at her husband's bastards being introduced into her household and being commensurate in rank with her legally born children.

Bastards whose parents are both of the nobility are not considered baseborn and trueborn children of a bastard might change their surnames to show their legitimate nature. For example, a legitimate son of a Waters might change their surname to Longwaters.

Rights of Inheritance
The baseborn have few rights under the law and custom when it comes to rights of inheritance. A bastard may inherit if the father has no other trueborn children nor any other likely kin to follow him. Additionally, a bastard can inherit if he is legitimized by a royal decree. However, a legitimized bastard falls in the order of succession at the end, after all trueborn offspring, including daughters.

Thus the custom states that bastards who take arms (noble born, knighted, etc.) take the coat of arms of their fathers with the colors reversed., with the possible addition of a red bar sinister, as exemplified by Ser Walder Rivers.

However, any man can be knighted, even a bastard. A bastard may even be appointed to the Kingsguard. In the Night's Watch, any man may rise to command, no matter the circumstances of their birth, such was the case of Cotter Pyke, commander of Eastwatch-by-the-sea, Jon Snow, who became its Lord Commander.

Social Status
It is considered rude to pry into the origins of a man's natural children. Men say that bastards are born from lust and lies, grow up more swiftly than other children, and their nature is wanton and treacherous.

This theory states that Sarella Sand has disguised herself as Alleras to study at the Citadel in Oldtown.

Supporting Evidence
* Alleras is Sarella spelled backwards.
* Both claim to have a Summer Island trader for a mother.
* Both claim to have a Dornishman for a father.
* Alleras has similar features to Oberyn Martell.
* It is implied that Salella is in Oldtown.
* When Oberyn Martell rounds up the Sand Snakes to keep them from pursuing revenge for their father, Sarella is already out of Oberyn's sphere of influence and does not send men to pursue her.

Questions
* Is Sarella pursuing revenge for her father?
* Why Oldtown? Does she truly intend to become a Maester?
Jaqen H'gar changes his face and name after he leaves Arya. The description of his new face matches that of the Alchemist that meets with Pate in Oldtown. Pate later meets Samwell Tarly, but at the end of his Prologue chapter he appeared to have been murdered by the Alchemist. It's possible the Alchemist stole his identity.

Supporting Evidence
* Jaqen H'gar's new face is similarly described to that of the Alchemist.
* It is unclear if Pate dies at the end of his chapter or merely passes out, but all other prologue characters either die immediately at or shortly after the end to their chapters. It is very unlikely the Pate Sam meets when he reaches Oldtown is the same Pate in the prologue of "A Feast for Crows."
* Jaqen H'gar can change the appearance of his face at will, and would easily be able to copy Pate's.
* It's quite strange for a Faceless Man to be in the Black Cells of the Red Keep. He would not have left Braavos without a distinct purpose.

Questions
* Who hired Jaqen H'gar and who is he meant to kill?
* How did this person pay the House of Black and White for the assassination?
There are many still unanswered questions in a Song of Ice and Fire. Here we try to piece together answers from what we already know.

Parentage
Brienne of Tarth
It is theorized that Brienne of Tarth is a descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall.

Jon Snow
It remains unclear who Jon Snow's mother is, and possibly even if Eddard Stark is in fact his father.

True Identities
Alleras the Sphinx
It seems very likely that the novice Alleras is actually Sarella Sand, one of Oberyn Martell's illegitimate daughters.

Jeyne Poole
Jeyne is hidden for quite some time before being used by Tywin Lannister as an imposter of Arya Stark to help solidify the North. It is unclear where she was held all that time.

Jeyne Westerling
Conflicting descriptions by Catelyn Stark and Jaime Lannister suggest perhaps Jeyne Westerling has an imposter.
