Aegon IV, known as Aegon the Unworthy, is considered one of the worst Targaryen kings. He sired numerous bastards and had them all legitimized on his deathbed.

During his youth, Aegon had an affair with his cousin Daena the Defiant. Daena gave birth to Daemon Blackfire but refused to say who his father was. When Daemon distinguished himself during a tournament, Aegon acknowledged him and gave him the sword Blackfire.

Aegon was attractive and popular with women both highborn and lowborn. People often joked that the Targaryen words might be "Fire and Blood" but Aegon IV's motto was "Wash her and bring her to my bed".
When one of his Kingsguard knights, Terrence Toyne, was caught sleeping with one of his mistresses, Aegon had both executed. The brothers of Terrence Toyne tried to avenge him but Aegon's brother Aemon sacrificed his life to protect him.

Among the bastards he fathered were the four "Great Bastards", so called because they were noble on both sides. The were:

While on his deathbed, Aegon legitimized his bastard sons and placed them on his line of succession after his firstborn, Daeron II. A few years after Aegon's death, Daemon Blackfyre rose against his half-brothers. The Blackfyres continued to trouble the Targaryens for almost 100 years.
