Daemon Velaryon was the Lord of the Tides, Master of Driftmark, and head of House Velaryon during Aegon's Conquest. Amongst the oldest supporters and closest friends of House Targaryen, Daemon served as the first master of ships to Aegon the Conqueror.[1][3]

Lord Daemon was the father of Ser Corlys and Aethan Velaryon.[3] Aethan's eldest son shared his name with Lord Daemon, his grandfather.[3][4]

Character

One of the oldest supporters of House Targaryen,[1] Daemon was also one of the closest friends to Aegon Targaryen, Lord of Dragonstone, and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys.[3]

History

A wealthy vassal of House Targaryen, Daemon was among the closest friends of Aegon Targaryen, Lord of Dragonstone, and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. After deciding to invade and conquer Westeros, Aegon summoned his bannermen and friends to Dragonstone for counsel, Daemon among them. After planning his conquest with Daemon and his allies, the Lord of Dragonstone announced his intentions to the Seven Kingdoms, beginning Aegon's Conquest.[1]

Daemon's ships carried Aegon's soldiers across Blackwater Bay,[5] landing his army at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. After Aegon was crowned as King of All Westeros shortly after landing on the mainland, Daemon was counted as one of the oldest supporters of House Targaryen. Daemon was therefore given the honor of becoming Aegon's master of ships and given control of the new royal fleet,[1] the bulk of which was formed from the warships of the Velaryon fleet.[5]

After House Arryn refused to bend the knee to House Targaryen, the king sent his admiral to take the city of Gulltown on the coast of the Vale of Arryn. A hastily assembled Arryn fleet, augmented by a dozen Braavosi warships, managed to repel the royal fleet, and Daemon perished during the battle in the waters off Gulltown. While the Valemen sank a third of the royal fleet, Visenya avenged Daemon by burning the Arryn fleet with her dragon, Vhagar.[1]

Family

Daemon's son Aethan succeeded him as Lord of the Tides and the Master of Driftmark, as well as the master of ships on the small council.[3] Another son, Ser Corlys, became the first Lord Commander of the newly established Kingsguard.[6]

Daemon's relation to Lady Valaena Velaryon, the mother of Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters,[1] is unknown.
