House Vance of Atranta is one of the two great branches of House Vance in the Riverlands, the other being House Vance from Wayfarer's Rest.

Neither their arms or their motto appear on the books. In noncanon material the author has blazoned the arms of this branch of House Branch as quartered, a green dragon on white and a white tower on black.

[edit] The House Vance from Atranta at the end of the third century

The known Vances from the Atranta branch during the timespan of the events described on A Song of Ice and Fire are:

  • Lord Norbert Vance: Lord of Atranta. A blind old man.
    • Ser Ronald Vance: His firstson and heir. Called "the bad".
    • Ser Hugo Vance: His secondborn
    • Ser Ellery Vance: His thirdborn.
    • Ser Kirth Vance: His fourthborn
    • Maester Jon: His fifthborn.

There is also a knight named Ser Dafyn Vance coming from an unknown branch of house Vance. He married Maegelle Frey, daughter of Stevron Frey, and is father to three children.

[edit] References in the books

[edit] A Song of Ice and Fire

  • As the other riverlords, Lord Norbert declares for Robb during the War of the Five Kings. His sons join his army in the war.
  • After Catelyn Tully scolded her brother for complaining about Roslin Frey expected lack of beauty, she sees how Edmure Tully avoids her, prefering the company of, among others, the young Vances
  • An unknown Vance is seen being Harmstrung by Black Walder during the Red Wedding. It is unknown who he was, but apparently all of Norbert's sons survived the war.
  • Tommen signs the pardon of Lord Vance after the war. It is unknown if the reference is for the Lord of Atranta or for the Lord of Wayfarer's Rest, but afterwards we see that both of them have been welcomed to the King's peace.
  • Although with all probability he was at the Twins during the Red Wedding, for some reason Ser Hugo Vance is at King's Landing at the beginning of AFFC, and joins Jaime Lannister in his expedition to besiege Riverrun.
  • Both branches of House Vance are present in the siege of Riverrun, and their Lords take part on the war councils.
  • Lord Norbert had been squired together with Brynden Tully at the service of Lord Darry.
