History
After he ascended the Iron Throne, King Daeron II Targaryen began negotiations with Prince Maron Martell of Sunspear. After two years, Maron agreed to be betrothed to Daeron's sister, Princess Daenerys Targaryen. They were wed in 187 AC in King's Landing, after which Maron officially knelt for Daeron, bringing Dorne under the rule of the Iron Throne.[1][2][3]
The concessions which Maron had won during his negotiations with Daeron and the increasing Dornish influence at court caused Daeron's other lords to grow dissatisfied. These complaints, among others, were reasons causing several lords to oppose Daeron II's rule during the First Blackfyre Rebellion.[3] Dorne sided with Daeron during the rebellion.
At the outbreak of Robert's Rebellion, Prince Doran Martell was slow to lend aid to House Targaryen, as he was furious at the mistreatment of his sister, Elia Martell. He eventually sent ten thousand men to fight for the Irone Throne at the Battle of the Trident.[4] The battle was lost, and a fortnight later Princess Elia and her two young children were brutally murdered by two Lannister knights, Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch, during the Sack of King's Landing.[5][6][7] Although he prevented his brother Oberyn from starting a new rebellion against their new monarch,[8] in secret they have worked since then on bringing an end to the reign of King Robert I Baratheon, who had condoned the murders, and destroying House Lannister, whom they held responsible.[9] Doran's brother traveled to Braavos to sign a secret marriage pact in his name, exchanging support to Prince Viserys Targaryen for a marriage between him and Doran's heir.[10]
Doran eventually became afflicted with gout, and in 298 AC moved from Sunspear to the Water Gardens. Two years later, Doran's gout has become far worse, and he is no longer able to walk, but instead is usually confined to a wheelchair.[11]

A Feast for Crows
Prince Doran Martell refuses every suggestion of going to war to avenge his brother Oberyn, who has died in King's Landing while fighting as someone's champion in a trial by battle, as he does not consider his death to have been murder by law.[11] He arrests seven of Oberyn's eight bastard daughters to prevent them from plotting against him, or being used in the plots of others,[11] and later arrests his own daughter and heir, Arianne, after foiling her plot to crown Princess Myrcella Baratheon, with which she hoped to claim Doran's seat.[16]
After having had her confided to solitude for several weeks, Doran reveals that he had been working to restore House Targaryen and rob Lord Tywin Lannister of all he held dear before killing him ever since he learned about his sister's death during Robert's Rebellion. With Viserys Targaryen dead, Doran now wants to ally House Martell with Queen Daenerys Targaryen, and has sent his son Quentyn to Essos to escort her to Westeros.[17][16][9]
