Meryn Trant is a knight from House Trant and a member of the Kingsguard of Robert I Baratheon. In the television adaptation Game of Thrones, Meryn is played by Ian Beattie and takes on some aspects of fellow Kingsguard member Ser Boros Blount.

Appearance and Character

Ser Meryn has a dour face[2] with a sour mouth[2] and pouchy bags[2] under his droopy eyes.[3][4] He has rusty-red hair[5] spotted with grey[2] and a rust-colored beard.[3][4] Meryn is tall and somber.[6]

As a knight of the Kingsguard, Meryn's armor consists of a shirt of enameled scales chased with gold and a tall helm with a golden sunburst crest. His greaves, gorget, gauntlets, and boots are gleaming plate. Meryn's heavy wool cloak is clasped with a golden lion.[2] He wields a longsword[4] and carries a shield.[7]

When jousting, Meryn wears white plate chased with gold and rides a milk-white charger with a flowing grey mane. He carries a twelve-foot lance.[8]

Ser Jaime Lannister considers Meryn sly and cruel,[5] and Sansa Stark finds him uncaring[2] and cold.[8] Margaery Tyrell thinks that Meryn is old and slow.[9] Lord Varys and Tyrion Lannister consider Meryn loyal to Queen Cersei Lannister.[10][11] Meryn is obedient to royal commands.[2][5]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Meryn accompanies Robert I Baratheon to Winterfell when the king asks his childhood friend, Lord Eddard Stark, to become his new Hand of the King,.[3]

Meryn participates in the Hand's tourney at King's Landing, defeating Harwin.[12] He is then defeated in the tourney by Ser Loras Tyrell.[10]

Amid the arrest of Eddard Stark after Robert's death, Queen Cersei Lannister sends Meryn with five red cloaks to apprehend Arya Stark in the Small Hall.[4][13] Syrio Forel, Arya's instructor in the water dance, defeats the five guardsmen with a wooden sword. The unarmored Syrio then attacks Meryn, but is unable to harm the knight through his plate. After Meryn breaks Syrio's wooden sword with his own longsword, a crying Arya follows Syrio's order to flee from the Tower of the Hand.[4]

King Joffrey I Baratheon uses Meryn to beat Sansa Stark into obedience.[2] The knight is present in the throne room when Ser Barristan Selmy is dismissed from the Kingsguard, and he laughs at his former sworn brother's shame.[14]

A Clash of Kings

Ser Meryn rides in the joust during the tourney on King Joffrey's name day. He breaks two lances against Ser Hobber Redwyne, unhorsing him on the second pass.[8]

When Tyrion Lannister, the acting King's Hand, goes to the bedchamber of his sister, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, he finds Meryn guarding the door with Cersei inside with the siblings' cousin, Ser Lancel Lannister.[15]

Acting on King Joffrey's orders, Meryn flings Dontos Hollard away from Sansa so that Ser Boros Blount can strike the girl. Tyrion intercedes, however.[16]

Meryn and Boros protect Cersei when her daughter, Princess Myrcella Baratheon, sails from King's Landing for Braavos and Dorne. The royal procession is attacked on its return to the Red Keep, however, and Meryn's white cloak is torn from his back during the ensuing riots in King's Landing. Tyrion orders Meryn and Boros to search the city for the missing Sansa, but the girl is safely returned to the Red Keep by Sandor Clegane.[17]

Meryn and Ser Osmund Kettleblack guard King Joffrey during the Battle of the Blackwater.[18] After the battle, Meryn, Osmund, and Ser Balon Swann spend hours knighting more than six hundred men.[19] When a knight loyal to Stannis Baratheon accuses Joffrey of being an abomination born of incest, Lord Tywin Lannister, the new King's Hand, has Meryn stab the accuser through the chest.[19]

Arya hates Meryn for what he did to Syrio, and she adds the knight's name to the list of those she wants dead.[20] While practicing swordplay in the godswood of Harrenhal, Arya imagines attacking Meryn, among others.[21][22]

A Storm of Swords

Ser Meryn guards the drawbridge of Maegor's Holdfast when Tyrion visits his father, Lord Tywin.[11]

Meryn and Osmund are ordered by Queen Regent Cersei Lannister to bring Sansa to the royal sept to marry Tyrion.[23]

After Joffrey marries Margaery Tyrell at the Great Sept of Baelor, Meryn and Margaery's brother, Ser Loras Tyrell, lead the royal procession back to the Red Keep for the wedding feast.[24] When Joffrey begins choking to death during the feast, Meryn tries to save the boy king by prying open his mouth and jamming a spoon down his throat.[24]

Meryn is later encountered guarding the Red Keep by Ser Jaime Lannister, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, during the latter's return to King's Landing, and Meryn is criticized for failing to protect two monarchs in Jaime's absence.[25]

During the trial of Tyrion for Joffrey's death, Meryn recounts the story of Tyrion beating Joffrey after the riot and tells the judges of other episodes when Tyrion threatened the life of the king.[26]

In White Sword Tower, Meryn expresses his belief that Joffrey was poisoned by wine. Jaime criticizes him for having followed Joffrey's orders to beat Sansa, and the Lord Commander orders Meryn to obey only himself, Queen Cersei, and Lord Tywin.[5]

A Feast for Crows

After Lord Tywin is found dead in the Tower of the Hand, Ser Meryn guards the apartments of the Hand of the King until the arrival of Cersei. The Queen Regent orders Meryn to find Lord Varys, but the master of whisperers has disappeared from the Red Keep.[27]

Meryn escorts Cersei and King Tommen I Baratheon to the Great Sept for Tywin's wake.[28]

Meryn and Osmund guard the doors of the Small Hall during the wedding feast after Tommen marries Margaery.[29]

When three men bring the head of a dwarf to Cersei, claiming it is Tyrion's, the queen has them give it to Meryn.[30]

Meryn guards Tommen as he sleeps in his bedchamber with his three new black kittens,[31] which the boy names Boots, Lady Whiskers, and Ser Pounce.

Meryn is part of Cersei's escort when she visits the Great Sept of Baelor to meet the new High Septon, and she has him gently move sparrows away from her litter. When a sparrow grabs Meryn's wrist and asks him to support the Faith of the Seven, the Kingsguard wrenches himself free. Cersei prevents him from attacking the sparrows with his sword.[7]

When a Tyroshi brings the head of another dwarf to Cersei, fraudulently claiming it to be Tyrion's, the queen orders Meryn to have him brought to Qyburn so that his nose can be cut off in punishment.[32]

Ser Meryn is in attendance when Queen Regent Cersei has Grand Maester Pycelle publicly admit that Queen Margaery is not a maiden. To prevent Meryn from potentially serving as Margaery's champion as a member of the Kingsguard, Cersei intends for him to feign illness.[9]

A Dance with Dragons

Imprisoned in the Great Sept by the Faith for her own crimes, Cersei resents Meryn and Boros.[33]

Ser Meryn is present at the Red Keep when Cersei completes her walk of atonement.[34]

Meryn guards the Hand's apartments in Maegor's Holdfast on the night of the deaths of Pycelle and Ser Kevan Lannister, Tommen's Lord Regent.[35]
