Nute earned his nickname of "the Barber" due to his ability in his youth to throw an axe so well that it was said he could shave you with it.[4]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Nute the Barber accompanies Victarion Greyjoy to Nagga's Cradle, and he squints to identify the ironborn ships already in the bay. When the Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet departs Iron Victory for the shore, he charges Nute with guarding their chests of treasure.[4] During the feast that night, Asha Greyjoy drinks Nute's wine after he passes out drunk.[4]

Nute is one of Victarion's champions during the kingsmoot on Old Wyk, and he displays the Lord Captain's steel axe to the ironborn. Nute tries to stop Asha from climbing up the steps to present her own candidacy, but she wrenches free.[1] Euron Greyjoy, Victarion's older brother, is eventually chosen as the new King of the Isles and the North.[5]

Nute is among Victarion's crew that boards the Serry ship during the taking of the Shields, and he kills a man with a throwing axe. Victarion then gives the deck of Iron Victory to Nute before going to his cabin to sleep with the dusky woman.[1] Victarion disapproves when he learns that Euron intends for widows and orphans from Lord Hewett's Town to be sold as slaves instead of taken back to the Iron Islands as thralls, but Nute is more accepting of the decision.[1] Lord Rodrik Harlaw worries about the vengeance of Highgarden, but Nute mocks him for being a coward.[1]

During the feast in Lord Hewett's castle, Nute is named Lord of Oakenshield by King Euron. Victarion suspects this was done to "steal" Nute from him. He tells Nute to refuse, but Nute, pointing out that Victarion cannot offer him the same, accepts the lordship from Euron.[1]

A Dance with Dragons

Sailing toward Meereen, Victarion misses Nute on Iron Victory, as Wulfe One-Ear is not as competent a sailor.[3]

Quotes by Nute

The strong have always taken from the weak. Thralls or slaves, it makes no matter. Their men could not defend them, so now they are ours, to do with as we will.[1]

Nute: The Crow's Eye sends us forth to face the longships, whilst his own men take the castles and the villages and grab all the loot and women. What has he left for us?

Victarion: We have the glory.

Nute: Glory is good, but gold is better.[1]

—Nute and Victarion Greyjoy

Euron: And rise, Nute the Barber, Lord of Oakenshield.

Nute: A lord?
Victarion: Refuse him!

Nute: Refuse him? Lands and lordship? Will you make me a lord?[1]
