Appearance and Character
A Storm of Swords
Raynald is part of the entourage of Robb Stark, King in the North, when he returns to Riverrun from the westerlands, having married Raynald's sister, Jeyne. The marriage broke Robb's alliance with House Frey, as he was to wed a daughter of Lord Walder Frey. Robb enjoys spending time with Raynald; Lady Catelyn Stark believes Raynald fills the hole left by the absence of Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy.
When Robb sets out for the Twins for the marriage of Lady Roslin Frey and Lord Edmure Tully, Raynald is the only Westerling to accompany him, serving as the royal banner-bearer. Arriving at the Twins, Grey Wind menaces several Freys, and Robb orders Raynald to put the direwolf in a kennel. Catelyn sees this as a deft move, as Robb has removed the Westerling from the jealous Freys' sight. Robb is betrayed and killed by Houses Frey and Bolton in the Red Wedding.
A Feast For Crows
According to his mother, Lady Sybell Spicer, Raynald was unaware of the arrangement she and her brother, Ser Rolph Spicer, had with Lord Tywin Lannister. Sybell informs Ser Jaime Lannister Raynald should have joy of marry a bride from Casterly Rock. Jaime understands this as Tywin intended to marry Raynald to his bastard niece, Joy Hill. The notion of her son marrying a bastard upsets Sybell. However, this is a misunderstanding on Jaime's part as Tywin already arranged for Joy to marry one of Lord Walder Frey's natural sons.
After the resolution of the siege of Riverrun, Ser Jaime Lannister asks about Raynald's fate. Edwyn Frey and Walder Rivers reveal that Raynald surrendered his sword to Ser Whalen Frey, but then freed Grey Wind from his chains in the stables when several Frey men-at-arms tried to kill the direwolf. While doing so, Raynald was hit by a crossbow bolt and fell into the Green Fork. Raynald's body was not identified among the thousand corpses afterward, but his trail of blood led to the river's steps.

Quotes about Raynald
Sybell: Rollam is with me, but Raynald was a knight and went with the rebels to the Twins. If I had known what was to happen there, I would never have allowed that. Raynald knew nought of any ... of the understanding with your lord father. He may be a captive at the Twins.
Jaime: I will make inquiries. If Ser Raynald is still a captive, we'll pay his ransom for you.
