Scales is one of the children of the forest in service to the last greenseer. Their true name is too long for the human tongue, according to Leaf.[1]
Appearance and Character
Like the other children of the forest, Scales is smaller than humans, but not childlike. Scales has nut-brown skin, dappled like a deer's with paler spots. Scales's hands have only three fingers and a thumb, with sharp black claws instead of nails. Scales has large ears that can hear things that no man can hear.[1] Scales has large golden eyes slitted like those of a cat,[2] allowing them to see in dark passages.[1]
Scales does not speak the Common Tongue.[1]

A Dance with Dragons
In the cave of the three-eyed crow beyond the Wall, Bran Stark and his companions Meera and Jojen Reed meet a remnant of the children of the forest, who serve the last greenseer, Lord Brynden. Their names are too long for the human tongue, according to Leaf, so Bran and Meera give them names. Scales is one of them. Bran does not know what Scales thinks about their new name.[1]
