Sam and the Old Bear discuss obsidian in ASOS and the fact that they “never knew” that it could kill the Others but must have known once and that they have lost sight of the true enemy etc.

I think the Children of the Forest used to gift the NW with obsidian – that must have been when everyone still remembered that it could slay an Other. I cannot find a reference on dragonglass checking, or helping to check, the enemy per se – its implied by GRRM that it played a crucial part – at least that’s my impression; we have yet to learn the sequence of events that lead to the Others being defeated. Perhaps this sentence needs to be rephrased (unless someone can find the reference).

I think the information probably also originates from reference 2. I do not own the book, so it is a little bit hard to check. I'm guessing that the History and Lore material originates from that source as well.
