Synopsis

Ned and the Small Council hear Commander Slynt’s report about the city filling with people from all over the realm for the upcoming tourney and plea for more men to deal with ruse in crime and unrest. Ned agrees to hire fifty new watchmen for the City Watch, and loans the watch twenty of his own household guard. Lord Renly shows Ned a locket with a picture of Margaery Tyrell, and asks him if she resembles Lyanna. To Renly's disappointment Ned tells him she doesn't.

After the meeting, Eddard Summon Jory and returns to his chambers. As he waits, he peruses the book Jon Arryn had been reading prior to his death, Lineages of the Great Houses by Grand Maester Malleon. When Jory arrives, Eddard tells him he relies on him to choose the men he promised for the city watch and continue with Jory questioning of Jon Arryn's servants. Most knew little, although the potboy mentioned that Jon Arryn had gone to see an armorer with Stannis. The stableboy talked of Jon and Stannis visiting a brothel together, and how Jon Arryn intended to send his son to foster with Lord Stannis on Dragonstone). Eddard is curious since Jon and Stannis were never friendly, as far as he knew.

Since Lord Stannis had taken himself to Dragonstone, and could not be reached, and the location of the brothel was unknown, Eddard decided to visit the armorer that Jon and Stannis visited. He questioned Tobho Mott the master armorer, who tells Ned that Jon and Stannis wanted to see the boy, Gendry. Ned immediately sees Gendry’s resemblance to the King when he was younger. Ned confronts Mott, and learns that an unknown lord had visited and paid twice the normal apprentice fee for Gendry, and told Mott to remain silent. Ned still doesn’t understand what Jon wanted with a king’s bastard and why it led to his death.
