Arya is chasing an old black tomcat, part of her training with Syrio Forel. She corners the cat and is seen by Prince Tommen and Princess Myrcella, who don’t recognize her. She flees, and finds herself in the dungeons beneath the Red Keep. She finds the room with the dragon skulls, then comes upon a deep well with a winding staircase. Two men are climbing it. The conversation revolves around what the Hand will do once he finds out the truth. Varys says the wolf and lion will soon be at each others’ throats as the Hand is not a man to put aside the attempt on his son’s life. Illyrio says it is too soon, “what good is war now?”, ‘we’ need more time. Varys says he can’t delay the inevitable unless he were a wizard, to which Illyrio responds that the eunuch is. Illyrio says, "If one Hand can die, why not a second?".

Arya is chasing a one-eared black tomcat, part of her training with Syrio Forel. Arya had found that catching cats was hard, and her hands were covered in half healed scratches, and her knees were scabbed over from tumbles. At first even the fat kitchen cat could avoid her. When she had originally gone to Syrio with her hand bleeding, he told her she was so slow, her enemies will give more than scratches. The castle was full of cats, all of which she had caught and brought to Syrio, except this one, which one Gold Cloak had said it was older than sin and twice and mean, it had even snatched a quail from Lord Tywin’s fingers. Arya had chased the cat all over the castle, and she did not know where she was when she finally cornered the cat, and she caught it as it tried to dart between her legs. As she was excitedly hugging the cat to her chest, she is interrupted.

Illyrio remarks that Dany is pregnant, but the Khal will not bestir himself until the child is born. Varys says time is running out, as more players enter the game. Lord Stannis and Lysa Arryn are gathering swords, Ser Loras and Lord Renly intend to try to wed Margaery Tyrell to King Robert (after he discards Cersei). Varys knows not what Littlefinger is up to. But Ned is the one who worries him. He tells Illyrio, "Delay, you say. Make haste, I reply". Varys says he needs another 50 birds, and Illyrio says they are hard to find, “so young, to know their letters”, to which Varys responds "the younger are safer". Arya makes her way to the Tower of the Hand, but Ned believes not a word of what she is telling him, about monsters and wizards. Yoren arrives with word of what transpired at the Crossroads with Catelyn taking Tyrion captive, but he insists it is for Ned’s ears only. Arya asks Desmond how many men her father has, and Desmond tells her fifty, but each northman is worth 10 southron swords.

Princess Myrcella at the end of the ally is asking what that boy is doing with that cat. With her are a couple of the Lannister household guards, a septa, and Prince Tommen. She asks again, and says he is a ragged boy, whom Tommen agrees with; you don’t wear silks and skirts when catching cats. She does not want to be caught, so she falls to one knee hoping to not be recognized. The septa tells her that she does not belong in this part of the castle. Arya is sure that if she answered the children would recognize her. The septa tells the guards to bring the boy to her. She escapes the grasp of the guard, and runs over the prince and avoids the other guard. She sees a window above her, not much more that an arrow slit wide. She leaps up, grabbing the sill, and pulls herself through, holding her breath to get through.

She continues her rush, ending up in a dark cellar, lost, and thinking she is in for it if she had been recognized. She hears not pursuit. She remembers in her nightmares getting lost in the Red Keep, even though her father had told her it was smaller than Winterfell.  It was very dark. She plans to count to 10,000, figuring it would be safe to come out. By 87 she could start to see and there were large shapes of monsters. Initially she is afraid, but she soon overcomes her fear. She makes her way and touches one of them to see if it was real. She can tell it is bone, and she thinks it is dead, but has a feeling that it knew she was there, and did not love her. She backs into a larger one, and whirling, a claw rips her leather jerkin. She runs, avoiding a larger on, dashes through jaws, and finds a door. She opens it enough to slip through into a darker room, and her eyes do not adjust so she can see. She remembers that a Water Dancer can see without eyes. As she proceeds down a hall she thinks that halls lead somewhere. Then she hears noises and sees a dim flickering light which allows her to see that she is above a well with steps leading down.

Coming up the well she can see two men and hear their voices, one with the sound of the Free Cities. She quickly figures out that they are talking about her father, and are saying the wolf and the lion will be at each other soon as the Hand is not a man to put aside the attempt on his son’s life; they are not ready. The torch bearer is a smoothly moving fat man with a round scared face with a stubble of beard, dressed in heavy boots, a steel cap, a leather cape armed with a dirk and a short sword; there is something about the man she recognizes. He asks what he can be expected do. Arya is sure that she has never meet the man with an accent; he has a forked beard, is grossly fat yet moves lightly, like a Water Dancer, and many expensive rings. The forked-bearded man asks why another Hand could not die; the other man responds that new Hand is not like the other. He then man states that they need time: the princess is with child and the Khal will not move until his son is born. The man with the torch continues that Stanis and Lysa have fled beyond his reach and are rumored to be gathering strength. The Knight of Flowers sent a letter urging his father to send his sister to court—he and Renly plan that Robert will make a new queen of her He is unsure of Littlefinger’s game. Stark worries him most, now having the book, thebastard, and he will soon have the truth. HIs wife has taken the Imp due to Littlefinger’s meadling; Tywin will take this for an outrage, and Jaime has affection for the Imp. The Lannisters going north will bring in the Tullys. He does not think, even with his skill, he can keep control much longer, but agrees to do what he can, but needs more gold and another 50 birds. The other man responds that this is a lot, given that they are so young to know their letters. He later comments that if they could keep their tongues, but the other replies that the risk is too great.

She follows the two for a long time, going down and down, the dressed stone being replaced by earth held back by timbers. After miles of following, they are gone, and there is no way to go but forward; she is blind and lost. At the end she is in knee deep stinking water, and eventually, at night, she finds herself at the mouth of a sewer where it empties into the river. She is so stinky that she removes her cloths and swims until she feels clean. She can look up and see the Red Keep, which is miles away. Her cloths are almost dry by the time she reaches the gate. The two Gold Cloaks sneer when she asks to be let in since she looks like a beggar; she tells them she is not a beggar, she lives there, and she wants to see her father. One of the guards says he would like to fuck the queen. Then one asks who her father is, the city rat catcher, and she  replies the Hand of the King. One tries to strike her, and she tells them that she is not boy, she is Arya Stark; if one puts a hand on her their heads will be on spikes; if they do not believe her they can fetch Jory Cassel or Vayon Poole. She finishes by asking if they will open the gate or need a clap on the head to improve their hearing.

She is brought to her father in his solar by Tomard and Harwin. He is bent over the biggest book Arya had ever seen. As he hears the report, his face is stern. He then tells her that he had half his guard searching for her, and was not suppose to go beyond the gates without his leave. She replies that she was in the dungeons, and they turned into tunnels, she did not have a light, and she could not go back the way she came because of the monsters. She then continues that two men were talking about killing him. They said that he had a book and a bastard, and if one Hand could die, why not another. Eddard is confused.  She describes them, and that the wolf and lion will eat each other. Everything was mixed up in her head. She tells him that he thinks one is a wizard. She decides not to mention knocking over the prince, and how she went into a window and found monsters. He  confirms that they were talking about juggling and mummers, and tells her that they must be mummers and that there must be a dozen troupes in King's Landing now. She tries to tell him that they were not mummers, but he interrupts her saying she should not be spying on people. Then he states he does not want his daughter crawling through strange windows going after stray cats and notes all the scratches on her arms. He continues by stating this has gone on long enough, to tell Syrio that he wants a word with him. The announcement of an arrival from the Night's Watch interrupts her.

Yoren is ushered in and Eddard greets him pleasantly despite being stooped, ugly, smelly and in unwashed cloths. Yoren apologizes for the hour, and states that Ayra must be Eddard’s son, he has the look. Arya replies that she is a girl, and then asks about her brothers since she assumes if he is from the wall he must have come by Winterfell, and if he can deliver a letter to Jon, thinking he would believe her. He tells Eddard he is there to find men for the wall, but he has other news, news that should be told in private. Eddard tells Desmond to show his daughter to her room, that they will talk tomorrow. She confirms that nothing bad has happened to Jon or her uncle, and he tells her that Jon is fine.
