Tyrion VII

Tyrion and Bronn are spending their first night on the High Road. Tyrion wants to make a fire, which Bronn, who wants to avoid the Mountain clans, thinks is sucide. Tyrion sees no point in trying to avoid the clans, and Bronn gives in. After Tyrion goes to sleep, the Stone Crows arrive, and Tyrion negotiates an agreement.

Synopsis

Tyrion and Bronn had taken shelter beneath some aspens just off the High Road. Tyrion is gathering wood, and when he asks Bronn if a branch will do for a fire. Bronn tells that if Tyrion wants a fire he must want to die since it will bring the Mountain clans down on them. Bronn thinks that it is best to travel fast at night—make no noise or fires. Tyrion states that traveling fast at night is a good way to fall down the mountain, and the clans will find them no matter what they do. Bronn states that then they are dead man. Tyrion replies then he would prefer to be comfortable, and asks if Bronn can find some game; he does not look forward to the salt beef and hard bread that Lysa had provided them.

Bronn threatens leave, taking Tyrion’s horse, and asks Tyrion what he would do. Tyrion replies that he would probably die. Then Bronn asks if Tyrion believes he would do it, and Tyrion states yes since he was quick to finish off Chiggen when he took an arrow in the belly; Bronn states Chiggen was good as dead anyway and his moaning going to get them kill--Chiggen would have done it for him. Bronn then states that he fought for Tyrion but does not love him. Tyrion replies that it is his sword he needed, not his love. Bronn asks how Tyrion knew he would be his champion. Tyrion states that it was because sellswords go for gold. The others that had taken Tyrion prisoner had done it for duty and honor. Bronn and Chiggen had gotten invovled because they thought Catelyn Stark would have rewarded them for their service and possibly make them guardsmen for House Stark. Bronn did not know the Starks—they would have given him a coin or two, but they hire guardsmen base on courage, honor and loyalty. When Bronn tells him that he has a bold tongue, and someday somebody will cut it out and make him eat it. Tyrion replies that everyone tells him that. Tyrion tells him that although he is scum, he is not stupid, and he knew where his best interest lie, luckily for Tyrion. When Bronn quickly lights the fire with flint, Tyrion compliments him by saying he is scum, but useful and almost as good with a sword as his brother Jaime. Then he asks what Bronn wants: gold, land, or women. He tells Bronn that if he wants it, keep Tyrion alive and he will have it. Bronn asks about what happens if Tryion dies. Tyrion answers that he will have one sincere mourner. Bronn then informs Tyrion that his is no man’s Toady, and Tyrion supplies that he is no man’s friend, and then adding that he is sure the he would betray just like Lady Stark if there was a profit, but to remember that Tyrion will match the price, he likes living. Bronn disappears to go hunting at Tyrion’s request.

They are eating a goat they had roasted. Tyrion complains about the meat’s toughness, but states he would not complain too loudly since at the Eyrie he would have to dance on a precipice for a boiled bean. Bronn than complains that Tyrion gave the turnkey a purse of gold and Tyrion states that a Lannister always pays his debt (he had kept the silver). After giving the turncoat the purse, he had told him that if he becomes tired of Lady Arryn’s service, just got to Casterly Rock to get the rest. Bronn asks what Tyrion plans when they reach the river and Tyrion states a whore, a feather bed, and wine for a start and then to Casterly Rock or King’s Landing since he has questions about a dagger. As they settle down for a night, Tyrion states that their friends are taking their time. Bronn state that if he were them he would fear a trap with them being so open. Tyrion tells Bronn that they should sing to scare them away.

As Tyrion whistles a song he asks Bronn if he had ever heard it and Bronn states he heard it in inns and whorehouses. Tyrion goes on to say the first girl he bedded use to sing it. Tyrion dwarf tells Bronn the story of a girl he and his brother Jaime rescued. They had heard a scream and a girl comes running onto the road chased by two men. Jaime goes after them with a sword while Tyrion dismounts to protect the girl. He tells how she is about a year older than him, low born, half-starved and unwashed. Tyrion gets her story before Jaime gets back. When Jaime leaves to get help from the rock, Tyrion takes her to an inn where he shares a meal and talk with her. The wine goes to a 13-year old Tyrion’s head, and he finds himself in bed with her. When he breaks her maidenhood she weeps and then kisses him. He finds a drunken Septon to marry them and sets up a cottage of her own where they play man and wife for a fortnight. When the Septon sobers, he tells his father, and that was the end of his marriage. Jaime is forced to confess that he set it up as a birthday present. Then Tywin has each of his soldiers have her, and she is paid a silver for each one. Tywin has Tyrion go last, having been given a gold to pay her since he was a Lannister. Bronn states that he would have killed him, and Tyrion states that he might; a Lannister always pays his debts. Tyrion rolls into the shadowskin to sleep, and dreams of the Sky Cell but he was the jailor, big with a strap, driving his father back to the abyss.

Bronn warning wakes him, and Tyrion motions Bronn to stay still when Bronn pulls his sword. Then Tyrion calls out for them to come join them and share their goat. A voice replies that it is their mountain and their goat. Tyrion agrees it is their goat and asks their name and they tell them they are the Stone Crows and a thin man, Shagga, armed with a helmet and long knife, steps into the light first. When they all appear, ten at least, armed with a variety of weapons including pitchforks, Tyrion give his name of clan Lannister and offers to pay for the goat they ate. One named Gunthor, who seems to be their chief, asks what he has to give them, and Tyrion tells them he has silver in his purse, and his weapons and armor. To this Conn states that Tyrion is going to pay them with their own coin; they can take what they want from their corpses. Gunthor states they have nothing to give them but their lives and asks Tyrion how he would like to die. He states “in his own bed, a belly full of wine with a maiden’s mouth around his cock at the age of eighty.” Gunthor then tells Conn to take the horse, kill Bronn, and take Tyrion who can milk goats and make the mother laugh. Bronn springs to his feet asking who dies first, and Tyrion screams no to him. But Tyrion once again talks himself out of certain death by telling them that they that they hide in fear as the knights ride by and asks if these are the best weapons they had, good for killing sheep at most. He adds that his father’s smiths shit better weapons. Gunthor is interested, and asks what Tyrion will give them for their lives: swords, lances, mail, and the Vale of Arryn.
