Aegon Targaryen was the second child and only son of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell. Had he ascended to the throne he would have ruled as Aegon VI.

History

On the day he was conceived, a comet was seen which led his father to believe that he was the Prince that was Promised.[1] Aegon was just an infant during Robert's Rebellion. He, along with his mother and sister Rhaenys, were hiding in the Red Keep when King's Landing was sacked by Tywin Lannister's forces. Tywin sent two of his bannermen, Ser Gregor Clegane and Ser Amory Lorch, to scale the walls of the Red Keep to hunt down and murder any remaining Targaryens. Ser Gregor entered the royal nursery and kill the baby present by dashing his head against the wall before raping and subsequently murdering Elia.[2]

It was revealed to Tyrion Lannister that the baby murdered was that of a peasant who Lord Varys put in the cot and hid baby Aegon. When Robert and the realm falsely believed him dead, Varys had agents smuggle him across the sea.

Aegon spent his life in exile under the name young Griff and was raised by Rhaegar's friend Jon Connington (also believed dead by many in Westeros due to a false story Varys concocted). Aegon has been trained in matters of arms, faith, history and languages. According to Varys he has also learned more importantly that ruling is his duty not his right.

To better conceal his identity he dyed his silver Targaryen hair blue (which also made his violet eyes appear blue) using the false story that his mother was a Tyroshi who dyed her hair blue and he did it to honor her memory. In 300 AL Aegon and his companions were on way to Volantis thinking to meet his aunt Daenerys Targaryen there when she marched from Meereen (it was unknown to them that Daenerys had decided to stay in Meereen). Aegon when learning this decided instead to go straight to Westeros (an idea suggested to him by Tyrion Lannister) with the Golden Company. His reasoning was when Daenarys learns of him she will head straight to Westeros to aid him and they will first meet as equals (instead of him appearing like a beggar before his powerful aunt in Slaver's Bay).

The timing for the invasion was ideal aswell as the Iron Throne was massively in debt thanks to Robert's spending (which was further made worse by Cersei Lannister when she refused to pay back the Iron Bank) thus the Iron Throne was unable to afford sellswords or try and buy the Golden Company off and was also preoccupied with Ironmen in the west and Stannis in the North, plus nearly all the Great Houses but the Vale and Dorne had suffered significant losses in the War of the Five Kings. The Company has already landed in Westeros taking several castles in surprise assaults including Griffin's Roost (Jon Connington's ancestral home). Aegon next plans to take Storm's End.

Appearance

According to semi-canon sources Aegon looked like a Targaryen. [3] He has the Targaryen traits of silver hair and violet eyes, both features which are also present in his aunt Daenerys.
