Aenys I was a member of House Targaryen and was the second king to rule the Seven Kingdoms from the Iron Throne. He was the eldest son of King Aegon I Targaryen by his sister-wife Queen Rhaenys Targaryen.

Character and Appearance

Aenys was tall like his father, but softer, slender, weedy and dreamy. He was pale with lilac eyes. His hair was perfumed, shoulder-length in ringlet curls. He wore a silky pointed mustache and beard in the style of The Three Musketeers. He dressed in velvet robes the same lilac colour as his eyes with gold lining. His crown was of gold, elaborate and much larger than his father's.[4] He was considered weakly at birth and early childhood, but once he bonded with his dragon, Quicksilver, he rapidly became stronger and more confident.[5]

History

Aenys was born on Dragonstone as the son of Aegon the Conquerer and Queen Rhaenys Targaryen. Aenys loved court life just as Rhaenys had, and he was a great patron of the arts.[3]

Aenys was married to Alyssa Velaryon. Their marriage was a political match,[3] and together they had at least three children: Jaehaerys Targaryen, Alysanne Targaryen and Rhaena Targaryen. Jaehaerys and Alysanne would eventually be married to each other, and have many children. Rhaena was married to Aenys's half-brother, Maegor, though the circumstances of this marriage are currently unknown. Rhaena would receive the name "Black Bride".[6]

Aenys was regarded as a weakling. His ascension to the throne, upon the death of his father Aegon, led to the Faith of the Seven uprising, who considered him weak and could not condone him being born out of incest. Aenys proved to be weak and indecisive during this crisis, and was unable to effectively take action against it. Much of the responsibility fell on his half-brother and Hand of the King, Maegor. Upon the death of their father, Aenys gifted Maegor with the sword Blackfyre, traditionally held by kings. Aenys admitted to all those assembled that he was not nearly the warrior his brother was.[5]

Aenys died in 42 AC after only ruling for five years, at the age of thirty-five.[3] Despite having at least one son, Jaehaerys, he was succeeded by his notoriously brutal half-brother, Maegor I, who had served as the Hand during his reign. The circumstances of Aenys's death are currently unknown.
