Aenys I was a member of House Targaryen and was the second king to rule the Seven Kingdoms from the Iron Throne. He was the eldest son of King Aegon I Targaryen by his sister-wife Queen Rhaenys Targaryen.

Character and Appearance

Aenys was tall like his father, but softer, slender, weedy and dreamy. He was pale with lilac eyes. His hair was perfumed, shoulder-length in ringlet curls. He wore a silky pointed mustache and beard in the style of The Three Musketeers. He dressed in velvet robes the same lilac colour as his eyes with gold lining. His crown was of gold, elaborate and much larger than his father's.[4] He was considered weakly at birth and early childhood, but once he bonded with his dragon, Quicksilver, he rapidly became stronger and more confident.[5]

History

Aenys was born on Dragonstone as the son of Aegon the Conquerer and Queen Rhaenys Targaryen. Aenys loved court life just as Rhaenys had, and he was a great patron of the arts.[3]

Aenys was married to Alyssa Velaryon in 22 AC. Their marriage was a political match,[3] and together they had at least four children: Aegon Targaryen, Jaehaerys Targaryen, Alysanne Targaryen and Rhaena Targaryen.

Aenys was regarded as a weakling. His ascension to the throne, upon the death of his father Aegon, led to the many uprisings by lords who considered him weak. The first of these challenges was by a bandit outlaw known as Red Harren who claimed to be a grandson of Harren the Black. Eventually caught & cornered by Aenys Hand of the King, Alyn Stokeworth. Harren killed Alyn but was then slain by Alyn Squire.

The Vulture King rose in the Dornish marshes and in the Vale, Jonos Arryn rose against his own brother Ronnel Arryn. Aenys proved to be weak and indecisive during these crisis's and was unable to effectively take action against them. Much of the responsibility fell to others among them his half-brother Maegor who upon the death of their father, Aenys gifted Maegor with the sword Blackfyre, traditionally held by kings. Aenys admitted to all those assembled that he was not nearly the warrior his brother was.[5]

Maegor crushed the rebellion at the Vale flying Balerion to the Eyrie and hanging Jonos and his followers, for this Aenys named him his new Hand of the King. Lord Orys Baratheon and Lord Sam Tarly known as Savage Sam crushed the Vulture King and his army in what became known as the Vulture Hunt.

A new crisis arose in 39 AC when Maegor took a second wife wife which angered the Faith of the Seven. Aenys tried to placate the faith by stripping Maegor of his office and sending him into exile to Pentos. A renowned Septon known as Murmison was appointed new Hand of the King by Aenys as a way to try and appease the Faith of the Seven.

Aenys however further enraged the faith in 41 AC when he wed his daughter Rhaena to his heir Aegon receiving a denunciation from the faith "King Abomination", Pious Lords and even smallfolk who once loved Aenys turned against him. Murmison was expelled from the faith for performing the wedding of Aegon to Rhaena and was later torn apart by smallfolk in a litter two weeks after he performed the ceremony. The Faith Militant uprising had begun.

According to Grandmaestar Gawen, Aenys despite being only thirty-five looked like a man of sixty. He died in 42 AC after only ruling for five years, at the age of thirty-five.[3] Despite having sons of his own, among them Aegon and Jaehaerys, he was succeeded by his notoriously brutal half-brother, Maegor I, who had served as the Hand during his reign. The circumstances of Aenys's death are under much speculation, some say he died from stress, others that he was killed by Visenya Targaryen so she could place her son Maegor on the Iron Throne.
