Aenys I Targaryen was the second Targaryen king to sit the Iron Throne. He was the son of King Aegon I Targaryen by his sister-wife Queen Rhaenys Targaryen. His younger half-brother was Maegor I Targaryen.

Character and Appearance

At birth, Aenys was small, with spindly limbs and small, watery eyes. He was weak and sickly for the first few years of his life, and slow to grow, but once he was given the hatchling Quicksilver Aenys began to thrive.[1][3] Although not in his youth,[1] as an adult Aenys was as tall as his father, yet slender and weedy at the same time.[4] His fingers were long and slim. He had lilac eyes, paler than his father's had been, and curly hair which fell to his shoulders in ringlets.[4] He also wore a silky beard and mustache.[4]

Aenys dressed in the finest silks, samites, and velvets.[1] There are conflicting accounts of how he was first crowned. According to Maester Yandel, Aenys was crowned during a ceremony in the Red Keep with an ornate golden crown.[3] However, according to Archmaester Gyldayn, Aenys was crowned with his father's circlet of Valyrian steel and rubies[N 1] on Dragonstone, and later presented by the High Septon at the Starry Sept with a crown of yellow gold, with the faces of the Seven inlaid in jade and pearl.[1]

Aenys was a kindhearted, courteous, charming, and soft-spoken man, who wished to be loved by everyone and always sought to please.[1] This made him indecisive, as he would dither and hesitate over his decisions, fearing to disappoint someone.[3] He made friends easily, but he also trusted everyone and allowed himself to be easily influenced [1] He was a dreamer, and delighted in music and dance,[1] so much so that he became a patron of singers, mummers, and mimes.[3] He was a good singer himself, and had a "strong, sweet voice".[1] A charming man, young girls doted on him.[1]

A diligent student who did not lack for courage, Aenys was an adequate fighter. However, he was not a warrior, and lacked his father's strength.[1] Training for battle eventually lost every appeal to him. Instead, he preferred the companionship of maesters and septons, and dabbled in alchemy, astronomy, and astrology. [1][3] Aenys was a clever man, though he could not be considered bookish.[1] He also loved to ride, and was given coursers, palfreys, and destriers. However, his favorite mount was always his dragon, Quicksilver.[1]

History

Early life

Aenys was born on Dragonstone in 7 AC to King Aegon I Targaryen and Queen Rhaenys Targaryen. He was weak and sickly at birth, and cried all the time. He refused to nurse from wet nurses and would only nurse at his mother's breast. He was so unlike King Aegon that it was rumored that the boy could not be the son of Aegon the Conqueror, who was a peerless warrior, and that perhaps his father had been one of the singers or mummers that Rhaenys had delighted in.[3][1] Aenys was three years old when his mother died in Dorne.[5] Always weak and sickly, the death of his mother shattered him. He went back to crawling around as if he were a baby. However, when Aenys was given the hatchling dragon Quicksilver, his condition quickly improved, and "as the dragon grew, so too did Aenys." The rumors that he was not Aegon's son ended at this time.[3][1]

Aenys was five years older than his half-brother, Maegor. He was not close with Maegor while growing up, as Aenys was kept by his father's side in King's Landing, while Visenya and Maegor lived on Dragonstone. Aenys was trained by his father's Kingsguard, and although he was an adequate fighter, he lacked his father's size and strength. From time to time Aegon would let him practice with the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre.[1]

Aenys was married to Alyssa Velaryon in 22 AC. Their marriage was a political match.[6] Together they had six children: three sons (Aegon, Viserys and Jaehaerys) and three daughters (Rhaena, Alysanne and Vaella).[7]

Aenys accompanied his father to Sunspear to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the peace between the Iron Throne and Dorne.[1] When King Aegon I turned sixty, Aenys took over the royal progresses together with his wife, Alyssa.[1] In 37 AC, when King Aegon I died of a stroke at Dragonstone, Aenys was at Highgarden. He swiftly flew Quicksilver to Dragonstone for the funeral and his coronation.[8] He was proclaimed king by Grand Maester Gawen.[1] After Maegor had spoken the eulogy for their father and Aegon had been cremated, Aenys gifted his brother with the sword Blackfyre, admitting that Maegor was more fit to wield the blade than he was. Aenys asked Maegor to wield the sword in service to him, and told his brother that they would rule together.[1]

After Aegon's funeral, Aenys traveled to King's Landing where he claimed his father's throne amidst the rubble and mud of the torn-down Aegonfort and the foundations of the Red Keep. He was cheered by many. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Aenys was crowned with his father's circlet of Valyrian steel and rubies[N 1] on Dragonstone, and later, when he traveled with his wife and children to Oldtown by the way of Riverrun, Lannisport, and Highgarden, was presented by the High Septon at the Starry Sept with a crown of yellow gold, with the faces of the Seven inlaid in jade and pearl.[1] However, according to Maester Yandel, Aenys was crowned during a ceremony in the Red Keep with an ornate golden crown.[3]

Reign

Even after Aenys recieved the faith's blessing, some were casting doubt on Aeny's right to rule. Westeros required a warrior, not dreamer. Many saw his younger brother Maegor as the stronger of Aegon the Conquerers two sons, foremost amongst these whisperers was Maegor's mother, the Dowager queen Visenya Targaryen.[1]

The young King's reign would be tested sooner than anyone could have imagined. The War of Conquest had left deep scars on the realm. Sons who came of age dreamed of avenging long dead fathers killed in the Conquest. Knights thought nostalgically about the days when a man with a sword and armour could fight his way to riches and glory. Lords recalled a time where they didn't need the leave of the Iron Throne to tax their peasants or kill their enemies. Aenys's ascension to the throne, led to many uprisings by those who considered him weak. [3][1]

The first of these challenges occurred in the riverlands, by a bandit outlaw known as Red Harren, who claimed to be a grandson of Harren the Black. Harren and his men seized the castle of Harrenhal slaying it's Lord and those loyal to him. On the Iron Islands, a man who claimed to be King Lodos reborn called for an uprising against the Iron Throne. The Vulture King rose in the Dornish marches, and gathered an army of Dornish people eager to avenge the destruction visited upon Dorne during the First Dornish War, with his rabble of over thirty thousand he invaded the Stormlands and the Reach. In the Vale, Jonos Arryn rose against his own brother, Lord Ronnel Arryn. Lord Royce gathered forces and penned Jonos up in the Eyrie, which caused the death of Ronnel[3] and his family.[1]

At the start of each of these uprisings, Aenys was confused and didn't comprehend why all these rebellions were happening, believing the small folk loved him, he wondered what wrongs he had did to the rebels and considered writing to each of them in turn to discover there reasons, Aenys proved to be weak and indecisive during these crises, and was unable to effectively take action against them. Aenys was fearful of attacking Harrenhal until he felt he had sufficient men, this delay allowed Harren time to flee into the forests with his accomplices. Aenys commanded a fleet be sent to the Vale to end the rebellion, but as the ships were about to sail he countermanded the order fearing it would leave King's Landing defenceless. While the King prevaricated much of the responsibility to resolve these crisis's fell to others.

It was Prince Maegor Targaryen who flew up to the Eyrie on Balerion to resolve the situation. The garrison knowing they could not defeat the dragon turned on Jonas and had him executed hoping Prince Maegor would show them mercy. Maegors mercy was having them all hanged instead of burned. [3][1]

Lodos was dispatched by Goren Greyjoy. Goren sent his fleet to Old Wyk and Great Wyk where the pretenders devotees were the most numnerous. Thousands of the Priest-Kings disciples were put to the sword after which the pickled head of Lodas was sent in a jar to King Aenys. In gratitude, Aenys granted Goren a boon. This would proof a regrettable decision, as Lord Goren used the boon to oust the Faith of the Seven from the Iron Islands, to the dismay of the rest of the realm and to the anger of the Faith.[3][1]

The Martells mostly ignored the Vulture King, and while Princess Deria Martell assured King Aenys that they were doing everything they could to put the upheaval down, in the end it came down to the Marcher lords to resolve the situation. Former Hand of the King, Lord Orys Baratheon, and the Marcher lords, including Harmon Dondarrion and Savage Sam Tarly, took part in the chase which became known as the Vulture Hunt. The Vulture King was captured alive and tied naked between two posts were he was left until he perished of thirst and exposure. [3][1]

The last of the four rebels to be killed, Harren was eventually cornered by Aenys's Hand of the King, Lord Alyn Stokeworth. Harren killed Alyn in the fighting, but was in turn killed by Alyn's squire. When all these insurrections finally ended, Aenys rewarded all those Lords and Knights who played there part in putting down these rebellions. Honoring them with gold, titles and lands. Bernarr Brune, Alyn's squire who slew Harren was Knighted as his reward. [3][1]

After the death of Lord Alyn, Aenys named his brother Maegor the new Hand of the King as his reward for ending the rebellion in the Vale. Despite their differences the two brothers ruled together amicably for two years. The amity between them did not last as they were the complete opposites of one another. Aenys was kind hearted, soft spoken, loved his wife and children and wanted the love of his people. Maegor was hard and fearsome, living for wars, tourneys and battle. Aenys sought always to please; when faced with difficulties, he would answer with soft words, whereas Maegors answer was steel and fire. Grand Maester Gawen wrote the Citadel that Aenys trusted everyone, Maegor trusted no one. Aenys was easily influenced whereas Maegor was unyielding. [3][1]

A new crisis arose in 39 AC, when Prince Maegor deciding that his wife was barren took a second wife while his first wife was still alive. This angered the Faith of the Seven and the High Septon. Many pious Lords of the realm also condemned the marriage. Facing mounting pressure Aenys gave Maegor a choice, put Alys aside and return to Ceryse, or suffer five years of exile. Maegor choose exile and refused to return Blackfyre. Aenys tried to placate the Faith by naming Septon Murmison his new Hand of the King. This appeasment could not completely fix matters with the Faith of the Seven. The High Septon continued his criticism of the King, Many Lords throughout the realm echoed this criticism, believing Aenys incapable of ruling. Aenys was oblivious to the discontent in the realm. With the foundation of the Red Keep finished and the walls of the castle starting to be raised, Aenys thought about the future of his family and decided it was time for his heir to wed and have children.[3][1]

In 41 AC, Aenys wed his daughter, Princess Rhaena, to his son and heir, Prince Aegon. Warrior's Sons scowled at the wedding guests as they entered the Sept of Remembrance. The wiser lord, anticipating this, stayed away from the ceremony. At the feast afterwards Aenys compounded his misjudgement by granting his son Aegon the title of Prince of Dragonstone, the title that once belonged to his brother Maegor. Dowager Queen Visenya rose in silence and stalked from the Halls taking Vhagar back with her to Dragonstone. The High Septon when he learned of the incestuous wedding was livid and had Septon Murmison expelled from the Faith for performing the ceremony. Aenys had enraged the Faith but did not seem to comprehend the extent to which he roused the realm against him. Thinking to win the favour of the small folk, he had Prince Aegon and Princess Rhaena go on a royal progress throughout the kingdom, but the couple were jeered wherever they went. [1]

Aenys sent a polite letter to the High Septon asking his High Holiness to restore Septon Murmisson and gently explaining the long history of Valyrian marriage customs in House Targaryen. Aenys received in response a denunciation from the Faith, addressed to "King Abomination". The pious lords of the realm, and even the smallfolk who had once loved Aenys, turned against him. Murmison was torn apart by smallfolk in a litter two weeks after he performed the ceremony. Thus the Faith Militant uprising began.[3]

The Warrior's Sons fortified the Sept of Remembrance on Rhaenys's Hill. Some Poor Fellows attempted to murder the King and his family, scaling the partly constructed walls of the castle, and slipping into the royal apartments. It was only thanks to Ser Raymont Baratheon, a knight of the Kingsguard, that the royal family survived.[9][3] In the face of this, Aenys abandoned the city with his family and fled to the safety of Dragonstone, where Dowager Queen Visenya Targaryen counseled him to bring "Fire and Blood" to the Starry Sept and Sept of Remembrance. Aenys, incapable of making a firm decision, fell ill. By late 41 AC, most of the realm had turned against him. Thousands of Poor Fellows prowled the roads threatening and slaying any of the King's supporters, and dozens of lords took up arms against the Iron Throne.[3]

According to Grand Maester Gawen, Aenys looked like a man of sixty even though he was only thirty-five years old, and the maester despaired of improving his condition. However, Dowager Queen Visenya took over his care and Aenys briefly improved. But he suffered a collapse upon learning that his eldest son and daughter were besieged at Crakehall during their yearly progress.[3]

Death

Aenys died in 42 AC, after only ruling for five years, at the age of thirty-five.[3] The circumstances of Aenys's death are under much speculation. Some say he died from stress, others that he was killed by Dowager Queen Visenya Targaryen so she could place her son Maegor on the Iron Throne. Visenya was known as many things, but a woman of pity is not one of them, so many asked why she tended to the care of the nephew she despised.[3]

The Iron Throne, due to Visenya's actions after Aenys' death, passed to Aenys's half-brother Maegor instead of Aenys's eldest son Aegon.[10] In the turmoil that followed Aenys's death and his half-brother's coronation, two of Aenys's sons (Aegon and Viserys) would be killed during their uncle's brutal reign.[10]

Small Council under Aenys I

During the reign of King Aenys, his small council had the following known members:

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 The crown of King Aegon I Targaryen has been described in So Spake Martin as "a simply circle of Valyrian steel set with big square-cut rubies" (So Spake Martin: Targaryen Kings (November 1, 2005)) and in The World of Ice & Fire as being made of "Valyrian steel" (The World of Ice & Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aenys I, and The Targaryen Kings: Maegor I) and as a "crown of rubies and Valyrian steel" (The World of Ice & Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aegon II). However, The Princess and the Queen and The Sons of the Dragon incorrectly describe the crown as being "iron and ruby".
