Lord Ambrose Butterwell was the head of House Butterwell during the reigns of Daeron II[1] and Aerys I. He was roughly fifty years old when he married his second wife from House Frey. He had heavy jowls and thin flaxen hair.[2]

Biography

Lord Ambrose was Master of Coin under Aegon IV.[2] He was raised to Hand of the King under Daeron II for a short time but his ability to lead was questioned when his attempt to deal with the burgeoning Blackfyre Rebellion failed miserably.[1] He was replaced by Lord Hayford.[1] During the Blackfyre Rebellion, he sent one son to fight with the Daemon Blackfyre, one to fight with Daeron II.[2] Both of them perished. His youngest son died of The Great Spring Sickness.[2]

The Mystery Knight

Lord Ambrose hosts a tourney to celebrate his marriage to Lady Frey. The winner would receive the dragon egg that had been given to his grandfather. However, the egg is stolen before it could be awarded. After Egg attempts to send a message to his father and tries to use his father's ring to overrule the maester, he is presented to Lord Ambrose. Ambrose recants his allegiance to House Blackfyre and flees with Lord Frey. Those loyal to the Blackfyres congregate at the tourney and plot to put forth Daemon II Blackfyre as king. However, before anything concrete could be planned, Bloodraven appears with an army and puts an end to it. Lord Ambrose loses Whitewalls, the house stronghold, and is only allowed to keep a tenth of the house's fortunes.[2]
