Appearance

He is six-and-a-half-feet tall, broad of shoulder, huge of belly, with legs like tree trunks, hands the size of hams, and no neck. His arms are thick enough to rival even Strong Belwas. Because of some disease in his childhood his hair had fallen out and now he is bald.[1]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Prince Doran Martell tells his daughter Princess Arianne that Ser Archibald, his cousin Ser Cletus Yronwood, Maester Kedry, Ser Gerris Drinkwater, and Ser Willam Wells are voyaging to Meereen to betroth Prince Quentyn to Daenerys Targaryen.[2]

A Dance with Dragons

While still off the coast of the Disputed Lands, the party's ship was ambushed by corsairs and Cletus, Kedry, and Willam were slain. In Volantis, the survivors try to hire a ship that will transport them to Meereen but this is unsuccessful. Ser Archibald suggests taking the demon road, but his idea is dismissed in favor of Gerris's plan to join the Windblown, a sellsword company on its way to the city.[1]

Among the mercenaries he used the name Ser Greenguts in order to hide his real name. The alias came after he was sick most of the time on the ship when Quentyn and his companions traveled to Volantis. When Yronwood and the rest planned how to desert the Windblown, the Tattered Prince summoned them and made them join a party of Westerosi mercenaries who are to pretend that they betrayed the company and want to join Daenerys.[3]

In Meereen, Daenerys summons him with Quentyn and Gerris. The Dornishmen present themselves and the Prince reveals their reason to be there. Unfortunately Daenerys declines Quentyn's offer for marriage since she is about to be married to Hizdahr zo Loraq. The Queen advises the Dornishmen to return to Dorne but they are determined to stay.[4]

Ser Archibald helps Quentyn in his scheme to take the dragons, although he and Gerris show disagreement with this idea.[5] When Viserion mortally wounds Quentyn, Ser Archibald tries to beat the flames with his bares hands but to little success. Both Yronwood and Drinkwater are arrested for treason but neither of them gives resistance in their grief.[6]

Barristan Selmy visits the Dornishmen in their prison cells where he tells them that they are to be hanged for treason and for killing four of the Queen's guards. Ser Archibald informs him that he actually killed only one but he also knows that the new king, Hizdahr zo Loraq, wouldn't care about that. Gerris blames everything that has happened on Daenerys but Yronwood manages to calm him down and tells Ser Barristan what exactly happened when they tried to capture the dragons and also that Quentyn promised Pentos to the Tattered Prince for his help in the plan. The old knight sees opportunity and offers them a ship to Dorne and Quentyn's bones if they deliver a message to the Windblown leader. He wants the Dornishmen to tell the Tattered Prince that he will be given Pentos if he helps in freeing the Meereenese prisoners in Yunkai. Gerris Drinkwater refuses but Ser Archibald accepts and convinces his younger companion to go along this plan.[6]
