Arianne Martell is the eldest daughter of the ruling Prince of Dorne, Prince Doran of House Martell, and his consort, Mellario of Norvos. According to Dornish Customs, she is the Heiress of Sunspear, and the future ruling Princess of Dorne. Presumably she will become a POV Character in The Winds of Winter.

Appearance and Character

Arianne is buxom and beautiful, with olive skin, large dark eyes, and long black hair that falls in ringlets to the middle of her back. Favoring her mother, she is short, standing at five foot two.[1] When attending to matters of politics, she conceals her lush and curvaceous body with flowing silks, jewels, and other ostentatious displays of wealth.[2]

Arianne is calculating, adventurous and fierce-tempered. When she sees something she desires, she strives to obtain it at all costs. Despite her beauty and maybe because of her high station, Arianne is still unmarried at the age of 23. Arianne has a clique of courtiers and confidants who accompany her, including Sylva Santagar, Drey Dalt, and Garin of the Orphans. She is also extremely close with her cousins, the Sand Snakes, especially Tyene Sand.

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Tywin reports from a letter he recieves from Ser Arys Oakheart that Myrcella Baratheon and Trystane Martell get on well and Myrcella has befriended Princess Arianne.

A Feast for Crows

Arianne had long been dissatisfied with her father and his style of rule, thinking him weak and vacillating. As heiress to Sunspear, she was permitted to hold the titular governance of Dorne during her father's absences at the Water Gardens, although until his death Prince Oberyn was considered to be the true reigning power at these times.

Despite her claims that she lost her virginity to the Bastard of Godsgrace, Arianne expected a marriage match that befit her rank as a high lord's heiress.[3] Instead, Doran publicly entertained suits from various elderly lords such as Lord Walder Frey and forbade more attractive matches to high-ranking heirs such as Ser Edmure Tully and Willas Tyrell. Doran's apparently humble marriage plans for her, coupled with the vague misinformation put out by him regarding her brother's location, brought Arianne to the conclusion that her father intended for her dutiful younger brother Quentyn to succeed him, passing over Arianne entirely.

After the death of Oberyn in King's Landing, Arianne took action, believing her father would not. With King Joffrey dead, she schemed to name his sister Myrcella as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in accordance with Dornish laws of inheritance. Arianne's intention was to precipitate a war with King's Landing, where Myrcella's younger brother Tommen had been crowned. She seduced Myrcella's sworn shield, Ser Arys Oakheart of the Kingsguard, and convinced him to aid and abet her by promising that as queen, Myrcella would permit them to marry in spite of his vows. However, the plan was foiled and caused the death of Ser Arys, the imprisonment of Arianne and her co-conspirators, and serious injury to Princess Myrcella herself.[4]

Prince Doran kept his daughter isolated in a pleasantly-appointed tower cell. Forbidden contact with the outside world and attended by servants who would not speak to her, she began a hunger strike. Eventually, Arianne was brought to her father; though weakened, she accused him of inaction over the deaths of his siblings and of attempting to cheat her of her birthright. Doran revealed that both were part of a larger plan to avenge the deaths of Elia and her children: he did not entertain serious suits for her hand from acceptable mates because he had planned in secret for her to wed Prince Viserys, the uncrowned Targaryen heir, and help restore him to the Iron Throne in an overarching scheme to wreak destruction on House Lannister.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

Prince Doran has revealed all of his plans to Arianne and has released all the Sand Snakes. Princess Arianne seats on his right side of her father at the feast to welcome Ser Balon Swann to Sunspear. Tyene, Obara, Nymeria and half the nobility of Dorne are there to witness the delivery of the mountains skull.

Arianne flirts with Ser Balon Swann but he is not easily distracted or seduced from his duty as his sworn brother Ser Arys was. Arianne is privy to her fathers plans now and has convinced Myrcella to lie to Ser Balon and claim Ser Arys Oakheart was slain by Ser Gerold Dayne. Under Arianne's direction again Princess Myrcella then pleads with Ser Balon to bring Ser Gerold to justice.
