Prince Baelon Targaryen, also known as the Spring Prince, for the season of his birth, and the Brave, was a member of House Targaryen and was the fourth born child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. He had three sons himself, Princes Viserys, Daemon and Aegon. Baelon was a dragonrider whose mount was Vhagar.[4][2][5][6]
History
Baelon was born in 57 AC two days after the arrival of Spring, thus he became dubbed the Spring Prince. Baelon was named after Baelon Targaryen who ruled as Lord of Dragonstone before Aegon's Conquest and who was also a second son. Baelon, though small, was healthy, lusty and loud baby. the following year, the babe Baelon was present at the tourney at King's Landing on the anniversary of Jaehaerys's coronation. There, he shared the royal box with his parents, his sister Daenerys, and his brother Aemon.[1]
Baelon while growing up, admired his older brother Prince Aemon. As soon as Baelon could walk, he began to follow Aemon around everywhere he went, the two siblings became as close as brothers could be. Baelon often imitated his brother, when Aemon began training as a knight with a wooden sword, Baelon was deemed to be too young to be given a wooden sword, so he got a small tree branch and ran into the yard and began whacking his brother, much to the amusement of the master-at-arms. Baelon was never timid around the dragons and once hit Balerion the Black Dread on the snout when visiting the Dragonpit. Ser Samgood of the Kingsguard remarked that the lad was either brave or mad, Baelon also became known as Baelon the Brave after this.[1]
His sister, Alyssa Targaryen who was born in 60 AC, when she learned how to walk began Following Baelon everywhere just as Baelon once followed Aemon. Baelon and Aemon became fast friends and trained in the castle yard each morning and were evenly matched, Aemon was taller and stronger, but Baelon was quicker and fiercer. Their contests were so spirited that servants, stable boys, washerwomen, household knights, squires, maesters and Septons would often spectate and cheer the princes on. In 72 AC at Duskendale, Prince Baelon took part in a squires melee during a wedding tourney and was defeated by his elder brother, Aemon. Aemon was later knighted and became a dragon rider soon after, taking the fierce newborn Caraxes as his mount.[1]
Baelon was determined to follow his brother, both in knighthood and claiming a dragon and in 73 AC, while still a squire, Prince Baelon took part in a tourney as a mystery knight known as the Silver Fool. The tourney was in the Reach and arranged by Lord Oakheart, who was celebrating the birth of a young son with seven days of jousting. Baelon unhorsed Lord Rowan, Ser Alyn Ashford, both Fossoway twins and Lord Oakheart's own heir, Ser Denys, before falling to Ser Rickard Redwyne. After helping him to his feet, Ser Rickard unmasked the mystery knight, bade him kneel, and knighted the prince on the spot. Prince Baelon remained for the feast before returning to King's Landing, where he became a dragonrider, bonding with the mighty Vhagar.[6]
At the request of his father, Prince Baelon tried to assist his younger brother Vaegon Targaryen in training to be a knight, but Vaegon had no skill at arms and showed no interest. Baelon in 75 AC was wed to his sister Alyssa Targaryen, both siblings were passionate about one another and the noises that came from the bed chamber after the bedding were amusing to the guests, the couple gave birth to their first child, a son who they named Viserys in honor of their fathers brother, Prince Viserys who was murdered during the reign of Maegor I Targaryen. When his brother Aemon was made Master of Laws in 81 AC, Baelon teased his brother that Aemon could make laws, while Baelon made sons and a second son named Daemon was born that year.[6]
In 83 AC Baelon together with his brother Aemon and the father King Jaehaerys ended the attempted invasion of the Stormlands by Prince Morion Martell of Dorne. Mounted atop their dragons, they destroyed the Dornish fleet before it could even make landfall. The war was fought and won in a day, and upon their return to King's Landing, Jaehaerys, Aemon, and Baelon received a riotous welcome as they had won a war without losing a single man, something not even Aegon the Conqueror had been able to boast. Jaehaerys was convinced that when Aemon became King, Baelon would serve his elder brother loyally as the King's Hand.[6]
In 84 AC, Alyssa Targaryen after a difficult labor gave birth to another son who was named Aegon after Aegon the Conqueror. Alyssa never recovered from Aegon's birth and died later that year at the age of twenty-four. Aegon died the following year, just shy of his first nameday. Baelon mourned her loss and never ceased to honor Alyssa's memory. Baelon lost interest in marrying anyone else after Alyssa's death, his younger ambitious sister Viserra tried to seduce Baelon a few years after Alyssa's death, but Baelon was unresponsive to her. In 87 AC, Viserra was arranged to marry Lord Theomore Manderly and desperately tried to seduce Baelon before being sent to White Harbour, she snuck into Baelon's bedchamber and disrobed, she waited naked for Baelon, while doing so she made free with her brother's wine. When Baelon arrived he found her naked and drunk and ordered her escorted to her own bedchamber.[6]
In 92 AC, myrish exiles fleeing from the Myrish Bloodbath, occupied the eastern part of the Isle of Tarth, Prince Aemon went on Caraxes to aid Lord Tarth, while the King's fleet sailed to liberate the island. Aemon was killed by a crossbow bolt fired by two myrish scouts who came upon the Evenstars camp by chance. What followed next was known as Prince Baelon's Wroth, Baelon descended on Tarth upon Vhagar howling for vengeance. Baelon slew countless Myrish with Dark Sister, while Vhagar engulfed their ships in flames. Baelon later returned to King's Landing, with his brother's body. Thousands lined the streets cheering his name, but Baelon upon seeing his mother, fell into her arms and wept for his brother.[6]
Prince of Dragonstone
In 92 AC, after the death of his older brother, Prince Aemon, Baelon was named the heir-apparent by his father, King Jaehaerys I. He was thus named the Prince of Dragonstone, passing over Aemon's daughter and only heir, Princess Rhaenys.[5][6]
In 100 AC, Baelon was named Hand of the King after Lord Commander Ser Ryam Redwyne of the Kingsguard had been dismissed from the office.[2] Baelon served admirably, but tragedy struck a year later, in 101 AC, when, during a hunting trip, Baelon complained of a stitch in his side. The pain only worsened when he returned to the city. His belly swelled and hardened and his pain grew so severe he became bedridden in the Tower of the Hand, while Grand Maester Runciter tried to heal him. On the fifth day of his illness, Prince Baelon died in his bed, with his father sitting beside him holding his son's hand. After opening the prince's corpse, Runciter determined the cause of his death was a burst belly. All the Seven Kingdoms wept upon the passing of Baelon the Brave, none more so than his father Jaehaerys, who personally lit his son's funeral pyre.[3][5]
After his death, an assembly of lords held the first Great Council, to answer the question of who would succeed King Jaehaerys upon his death.[4][5] Baelon's eldest son, Viserys, was chosen and succeeded Jaehaerys I two years later as King Viserys I.[4]

Baelon was married to his younger sister, Alyssa, and had three sons with her: Viserys, Daemon, and Aegon. Alyssa died the same year Aegon was born following a difficult labour, Aegon died the following year, just shy of his first nameday.[7][6]
