The Battle of the Whispering Wood was a pivotal battle during the War of the Five Kings. It relieved Riverrun while shattering one of the Lannister armies in the Riverlands.[6]

Prelude

Ser Jaime Lannister grew overconfident after the easy victories in the Riverlands. He smashed the Riverlords forces at the battles of the Golden Tooth and Riverrun, capturing the heir to the Riverlands, Ser Edmure Tully and many of his knights, and forming a siege on its capital, Riverrun. His father's, Lord Tywin, host was holding the crossing in the east, essentialy securing a Lannister victory in the Riverlands. Of late, Jaime had been leading large parties to attack the scattered surviving Riverlord forces at their own strongholds.

Unknown to Jaime, Robb Stark had forged an alliance with House Frey, securing him passage over the Trident. Joined by additional soldiers from House Frey and House Mallister of Seagard, Robb moved on Riverrun from the north in an attempt to outflank the unsuspecting Lannister forces and relieve the besieged forces at Riverrun. Robb had managed to keep his march secret, thanks to the efforts of his after great uncle, Ser Brynden Tully, and his outriders who were able to shoot down all of the Lannister ravens and any outriders screening the camps.

The Battle

Since his lord father had lost to Jaime at the Battle of the Golden Tooth, Ser Marq Piper had been harrying the Lannister supply trains with half a hundred men.[7] As Robb neared, he joined in these efforts. In an attempt to draw Ser Jaime from his camp, Robb Stark sent a small force of a few hundred men carrying Tully colors to lure him out. Ser Jaime Lannister, who has been leading a party of few hundred men, was lured north, where the seasoned outriders and scouts under Ser Brynden Tully killed his own outriders. Instead of turning back after being blind, Jaime strikes at the first enemies he encounters, entering the Wood and right into the trap Robb Stark had set for him. When Ser Jaime came out, the raiders fell back to a point where the rest of the Stark force were waiting.

Forces of Lady Mormont sounded horns to signal the trap had been sprung. Greatjon Umber, Lord Rickard Karstark, Ser Stevron Frey and Lord Jason Mallister all had subordinate commands. The outcome of the battle was a complete success for Houses Stark and Tully. According to Theon Greyjoy, the Lannisters lost ten men for every one of Robb's that fell.[6] When Ser Jaime saw the battle lost, he rallied his retainers and attempted to cut his way through the host to slay Robb Stark in single combat. He was halted, but not before Daryn Hornwood, Eddard and Torrhen Karstark of Robb Stark's personal guard were slain.

Jaime was captured, and alongside Jaime, near a hundred knights and a dozen lords bannermen were captured, including Lord Westerling, Lord Quenten Banefort, Ser Garth Greenfield, Lord Regenard Estren, Ser Tytos Brax, Mallor the Dornishman, and Willem Lannister, and the Lannister cousins Cleos Frey and Tion Frey.[6]

Aftermath

The capture of Ser Jaime left the Lannister army surrounding Riverrun leaderless and led to its disintegration at the Battle of the Camps. Having Ser Jaime as a hostage gives the Starks a bargaining chip, allowing them to call a hostage exchange or even negotiate peace terms. The deaths of Eddard and Torrhen Karstark by Jaime's hand planted a seed of vengeance in their father Lord Rickard's heart.

With his victory sectured, Robb Stark regrouped and lead an attack on the still unsuspecting and now leaderless, Lannister siege camps around Riverrun.
