Belwas, more commonly known as Strong Belwas, is a tanned eunuch colossus. His nickname Strong Belwas comes from the arenas of Meereen where he used to fight.[1] He claims he never lost a fight and he allowed all his opponents to cut him once before they died.

Appearance

He is big man, with many pallid scars crossing his chest. He states that each scar represents a man he has killed since he lets each cut him before killing them. He weighs 15 stone, has gapped teeth, is bald and his arms and belly are huge. He is armed with a curved arakh and a small shield the size of a pie plate which he holds with his hand instead of strapped to his forearm like a knight. He wears baggy pants, a yellow silk bellyband and a tiny leather vest with iron studs that does not cover his nipples.[2]

History

After his career as a gladiator in Meereen, he was sold to Qohor then to Pentos where he was bought by Magister Illyrio Mopatis.[3]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Accompanied by his old squire, Arstan Whitebeard, he is sent by Illyrio to protect Daenerys Targaryen, whom he meets in Qarth, and take her back to Pentos. He also tells Daenerys that he has three ships her to travel in.[4]

A Storm of Swords

Strong Belwas fights hero before Meereen- by Sir-Heartsalot ©.

He travels with Daenerys Targaryen in the ship, Balerion, where he is served by Arstan. On the ship all he does is eat.[5]

Strong Belwas is one of her bodyguards when she goes to purchase the Unsullied from the Good Masters of Astapor.[6]

He is with Daenerys when she treats with the commanders of the swordsell companies before Yunkai. When Prendahl na Ghezn one of the three captains of the Stormcrows insults Daenerys, Strong Belwas offers to cut out his tongue. Daenerys refuses saying that he has her safe conduct.[7]

When Daenerys Targaryen besieges Meereen, Oznak zo Pahl rides out of Meereen on a white charger with a fourteen foot lance, challenging the besiegers to send forth a champion. Initially her bloodriders wanted to accept his challenge, but Daenerys did not feel she could not afford to lose them, and he is irrelevant. Ser Jorah agrees with Dany, but Whitebeard disagrees, stating that the knight is building courage in the hearts of his men, and doubt in Daenerys’ men. Ser Jorah points out that if the knight defeats their champion that would have a bad effect on their moral. Daenerys decides she had more serious problems than a pink and white hero shouting insults. An hour later the pink and white hero pisses toward her camp when there is not response. He gets supportive jeers from the walls of Meereen; the men on the wall also start to piss down to show their contempt. Another asks to be her champion, and Daenerys has come to the decision that somebody must challenge the knight, but she needs somebody she can afford to lose. Daenerys decides that Strong Belwas is perfect since she can easily spare him (all he seems to do is eat and boast, and she needs to know his value), and his death as an ex-slave would not give the knight prestige, and a defeat to an ex-slave would be an insult. Upon hearing of his task while eating a sausage, he asks for his weapon and shield and onions and liver when he returns from the battle (killing makes him hungary). Strong Belwas plods out to face Oznak armored only in his small leather vest and a small round steel shield, the size of a pie plate, and armed with his arakh. Three times he spins away from the lance as Oznak charges him. On the fourth charge Strong Belwas ducks and slashes the horse's leg, sending it to the ground. Ozank leaps clear of his fallen horse and meets Belwas is a sword duel. Belwas allows himself to be wounded in the stomach before he kills Ozank. He then severs his head from his body holding it up high for those in Meereen to see. The defenders of the city fire arrows, but Belwas is too far away. Strong Belwas then squats to shat towards the city, wiping himself on the knight’s clock, then looting the corpse and killing the horse. When he returns to camp Daenerys forces the reluctant Belwas to be treated for his wound by a Yunkish freeman known for his healing skills because Daenerys had lost her husband to a similar wound.[8]

Strong Belwas, Ser Barristan Selmy, Ser Jorah Mormont and twenty other men enter Meereen though the sewers to take the city. When he enters the city, he goes to the nearest of the fighting pits raising the fighting slaves to revolt enabling Daenerys Targaryen to take the city.[9]

A Dance with Dragons

Belwas serves as a member of Daenerys Targaryen's queensguard but nearly dies after eating poisoned locusts given to him but previously offered to Daenerys by Hizdahr zo Loraq at the opening of the fighting pits of Meereen.[10][11] Despite the poison he managed to survive and later recovered. He attended the war council of Ser Barristan Selmy.[12][13][14]
