Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Bronn, along with his fellow sellsword Chiggen, is a patron of the inn in which Catelyn Stark calls for loyal men to help her arrest Tyrion Lannister for the attempted murder of her son, Bran Stark. Bronn and Chiggen heed Catelyn's call and help escort Tyrion to the Eyrie.[5] During the journey Bronn survives an attack on their party by members of a clan of the Mountains of the Moon and becomes closer to Tyrion,[6] to Catelyn's unease.[7]
Tyrion notes that Bronn and Chiggen only came to Catelyn's aid because they were sellswords and were hoping for a reward. During a later ambush, Chiggen is mortally wounded and Bronn discreetly finishes him off, claiming to Lady Catelyn that Chiggen died from his wounds.[6]
During Tyrion's trial, Bronn volunteers to champion him in trial by combat and kills Ser Vardis Egen, saving Tyrion's life.[8] He does so for the promise of wealth and makes no secret of his motives. Thereafter he enters into Tyrion's service as a hired sword.[2] Prior to the battle on the Green Fork he finds Shae for Tyrion amongst the camp followers and later takes part in the battle.[4] When Tywin Lannister sends Tyrion to King's Landing, Bronn accompanies him.[9]
A Clash of Kings
In King's Landing, Bronn becomes the captain of Tyrion's guards.[3] During his time at King's Landing, Bronn is tasked with hiring sellswords for the upcoming hostilities and familiarizes himself with the politics within the Red Keep. Bronn also survives the initial spark of the riots that ravages the city due to famine, afterwards moving to protect Tyrion from the Kingsguard knights he argues with. Tyrion assigns him to head the relief effort to ensure that the fires started by the rioters are extinguished.
When Stannis Baratheon's host finally arrives, Bronn is put in charge of pulling the massive chain tight across the Blackwater Rush at the right time, a position of vital importance during the Battle of the Blackwater. The operation is a success and much of Stannis's fleet is destroyed by wildfire.[10] For his contribution, Lord Tywin Lannister puts Bronn forward for knighthood while Tyrion recovers from his wounds.[11][12] Ser Bronn of the Blackwater takes as his sigil a green, flaming chain on a smoking grey field, in commemoration of his role in the battle. He is presumably among the six hundred men who are knighted by the white cloaks Balon Swann, Meryn Trant, and Osmund Kettleblack.[13]
A Storm of Swords
Tyrion has Bronn discreetly kill the singer Symon Silver Tongue after Symon tries to blackmail Tyrion. It is implied that his body is disposed of in one of Flea Bottom's pot shops.[14]
When Tyrion is accused of murdering his nephew, King Joffrey I Baratheon, Bronn refuses to champion him a second time in a trial by combat against the monstrous Ser Gregor Clegane, taking an offer from Cersei instead to marry into the wealthy House Stokeworth.[15]
A Feast for Crows
Lady Tanda Stokeworth informs Cersei Lannister that Bronn names his wife Lollys's bastard son Tyrion, in dubious honor of his former employer.[16]
Bronn soon takes four knights into his household, although Ser Balman Byrch tells Cersei that they are upjumped sellswords, with not a thimbleful of chivalry to be found amongst the four of them.[17] This leads Queen Cersei to fear that he is still in league with Tyrion, and causes Cersei to conspire with Bronn's good-sister Falyse Stokeworth and her husband Balman to have Bronn killed.
Ser Balman, ever chivalrous, challenges Bronn to a duel, but Bronn kills Balman using dirty tactics. Claiming to be Lord Stokeworth, he expels Lady Falyse from Castle Stokeworth.[18] After the death of Falyse at the hands of Qyburn, Lollys becomes the official Lady of Stokeworth with Bronn as Lord Protector.[19]
