He was with the small army under the command of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont that went in search of Benjen Stark and Mance Rayder. He commanded the men from the Shadow Tower[2].

The men of the Night's Watch made their stand at the Fist of the First Man but they were attacked by Others. They retreated to Craster's Keep. Many were wounded. Amoung them was Ser Byam, who had a wound at the shoulder[3] The men were hungry and accused Craster of keeping food from them. Craster reached for his dagger but was killed by Dirk. Dying he fell on Ser Byam Flint. When Lord Mormont wanted to have the murderer killed he was murdered himself and a fight erupted between the murderers and men loyal to Mormont.
