Yet in one thing, Cregan would not be dissuaded: the betrayers and poisoners of King Aegon II must pay the price. To kill a cruel and unjust king in lawful battle was one thing. Cregan Stark was the Lord of Winterfell and head of House Stark during the reigns of kings Viserys I, Aegon II, Aegon III and Daeron I Targaryen.[3][4][2] He briefly served as Hand of the King for Aegon III after the Dance of the Dragons.[4][1]

Character

According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Cregan was a stern and formidable lord.[1] Like many other Starks, Cregan was a good friend of the Night's Watch.[1] Lord Cerwyn was said to be his closest friend.[1]

History

Early life

Cregan Stark was born in 108 AC,[2] the eldest son of Lord Rickon Stark and Lady Gilliane Glover.[6] He had a younger brother, who died in 119 AC, and according to The Testimony of Mushroom, a bastard half-sister, Sara Snow.[2] Cregan became the Lord of Winterfell and the Warden of the North in 121 AC at the age of thirteen, when his lord father passed away. During his minority, his uncle Bennard ruled the north as regent. When Cregan turned sixteen and came of age in 124 AC, Bennard was slow to surrender his power. Relations between Cregan and Bennard grew strained as the young Lord of Winterfell chafed under the limits imposed on him by his uncle.[2]

Finally, in 126 AC, Cregan rose up against his uncle, and imprisoned Bennard and his three sons, taking the rule of the north into his own hands. Soon after, he married Lady Arra Norrey, a beloved childhood companion. However, she died in 128 AC while giving birth to a son and heir, whom Cregan named Rickon after his father.[2]

The Dance of the Dragons

Upon the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon flew to Winterfell on his dragon Vermax to gain the support of the Starks and the north for his mother Rhaenyra Targaryen's claim to the Iron Throne. The alliance, known as the Pact of Ice and Fire, stated that a Targaryen princess, the future firstborn daughter of Jacaerys, would marry his son Rickon. Cregan pledged his support to the blacks during the Dance of the Dragons.[7]

Cregan had a bastard half-sister, and Mushroom's ribald account of the war claims that Jacaerys fell in love with and secretly married the girl.[2]

Lord Roderick Dustin commanded the first host of northmen who marched south, known as the Winter Wolves, men who feared a long winter. They were followed by a larger host led by Lord Cregan, many of these men were childless, homeless, unwed, or younger sons marching to war to spare their families from supporting them in winter. Cregan's host was denied combat, however, by the poisoning of King Aegon II Targaryen. Lord Stark had intended to punish the leaders of Aegon II's greens, but Lord Corlys Velaryon had already sent envoys seeking peace.[4]

Cregan held court at King's Landing for six days, a time known as the Hour of the Wolf. Acting in the name of the eleven-year-old boy king Aegon III Targaryen, who named him Hand of the King, Cregan had twenty-two men arrested for the murder of Aegon II, among them Lord Larys Strong and Corlys Velaryon. Cregan Stark served as Hand for a day, presiding over the trials and executions. Most of the accused, led by Ser Perkin the Flea, agreed to join the Night's Watch, but Ser Gyles Belgrave of the Kingsguard and Larys the Clubfoot chose death. Cregan married Alysanne Blackwood in exchange for honoring Aegon III's pardon of Lord Corlys. Lord Stark resigned as Hand the following day and returned to the north.[4][1] Many of the northmen who had marched to King's Landing with him remained in the south, however.[8]

Later Life

King Aegon III Targaryen granted many rewards to Cregan, although a Targaryen princess never did marry into House Stark.[9] Maester Kennet served at Winterfell during Cregan's long reign.[10]

Cregan once fought Prince Aemon the Dragonknight. Aemon claimed he never faced a finer swordsman.[11]

Cregan was entombed in the crypts of Winterfell after his death.[11][3]

Quotes about Cregan

Oh, there, he's Cregan Stark. He fought with Prince Aemon once, and the Dragonknight said he'd never faced a finer swordsman.[11]
