Lord Davos Seaworth, commonly called the Onion Knight, is the head of House Seaworth. He was once a smuggler, but after Robert's Rebellion he became a landed knight and Stannis Baratheon's most honest and loyal supporter. He captains Black Betha. He has seven sons, many of them serving on ships in Stannis's fleet. His wife Marya tends his lands on Cape Wrath. Davos created his own house sigil, a black ship with an onion on the sails upon a grey field.[3] Davos becomes a POV character starting with A Clash of Kings. He is played by Liam Cunningham in the television adaptation Game of Thrones.

Davos is a slight man with an ordinary face. He has brown hair and eyes, and a beard peppered with gray. The first joints of the fingers of his left hand are missing.[4] He wore the bones in a pouch around his neck until he lost them.

History

Davos is a man of low birth, born in the wretched Flea Bottom ward of King's Landing to a life of hardship. In his youth, he found service on the Cobblecat under Roro Uhoris, a Tyroshi smuggler and pirate. Eventually Uhoris was caught by the Night's Watch fleet from Eastwatch, where he was executed for trading weapons to wildlings. While impressed by this event, Davos did not refuse to trade with the members of the Night's Watch later.[5][6]

After his time aboard the Cobblecat, Davos made his own way and secured his own ship, the Black Betha, becoming one of the most infamous smugglers to sail the narrow sea. He piloted his black-sailed ship into harbors in the dead of night, and navigated treacherous shallows.[5] Davos married a woman named Marya; together they had seven sons: Dale, Allard, Matthos, Maric, Devan, Stannis and Steffon.

During Robert's Rebellion, almost a year into the Siege of Storm's End, Davos took it upon himself to run the Redwyne blockade to smuggle onions and other foodstuffs into the castle. The food allowed Stannis Baratheon's men to hold on until Eddard Stark arrived to break the siege. As a reward for his service, Stannis knighted him, giving him choice lands on Cape Wrath and allowing him to choose Seaworth as the name of his new house. However, Davos lost the first joint from each finger of his left hand, as payment for his past crimes. Davos found the ruling just, and agreed to the terms if Stannis would swing the blade himself.[4] He kept the bones of his joints in a pouch around his neck because he believed they were lucky, having bought a future for his family.[7]

A Clash of Kings

When Stannis declares himself King of the Seven Kingdoms after the death of his brother Robert, Davos supports his claim. He is strong in the Faith of the Seven, however, and dislikes Stannis's conversion to R'hllor under the guidance of Melisandre. Nonetheless he tries to stop his friend Maester Cressen from trying to poison the red sorceress. Davos is first sent as an envoy to the Lysene pirate Salladhor Saan, whose sellsail fleet he recruits to Stannis's cause. He then treats with the lords of the Stormlands, but there his mission is unsuccessful.[4]

Davos is then sent to Gulltown, the Fingers, the Three Sisters and White Harbor to deliver letters and proclamations declaring the royal heirs are bastards born of incest between Jaime Lannister and Queen Cersei Baratheon. As he goes north, his sons Dale and Allard are sent south and east. As Davos is illiterate, Stannis gives him knights to read the letters aloud to the illiterate smallfolk.[3] After finishing that task, he joins Stannis at the Siege of Storm's End. He is present among many of the other lords when Stannis parleys with the castellan Ser Cortnay Penrose. Stannis has Davos use his smuggling skills to sail Melisandre under Storm's End so she can birth a shadow assassin that would slay Ser Cortnay. Davos is horrified by the event.[7]

Ser Davos and four of his seven sons are part of the fleet that assaults King’s Landing in the Battle of the Blackwater. Davos tries to persuade the fleet commander, Imry Florent, to send in scouts to test whatever new defenses the Lannisters had prepared, but Ser Imry refuses to listen, relying on their superior numbers. Davos notes other tactical errors, such as engaging the royal fleet in the narrow Blackwater Rush, where their numbers are of little use. Once the advance squadrons enter the rush, a huge chain is raised to close it off and trap them. Much of the fleet is destroyed by wildfire. All three Seaworth ships are destroyed, along with many others. All four of Ser Davos’s elder sons Dale, Allard, Matthos and Maric are lost, and he himself nearly dies.[6]

A Storm of Swords

At the conclusion of the battle Davos is stranded on the Spears of the Merling King for many days, where he hallucinates that the Seven talk to him,[8] until chance blows one of Salladhor Saan’s ships towards him. Blaming Melisandre for the disaster, he plans to kill her. Her magic gives her warning, however, and he is arrested by Ser Axell Florent.[9]

Davos is released from the dungeon, whereupon he denounces Ser Axell's plan to slaughter the smallfolk of Claw Isle in retribution for old Lord Celtigar bending the knee; for his honest counsel Stannis names him Lord of the Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea, and Hand of the King, in replacement of Lord Alester Florent, who is to be burned for treason.[10] He is despised by the Queen's men, but gains allies among the King's men.[5] Davos continues to fight Melisandre's influence over Stannis by smuggling King Robert's bastard, Edric Storm, out of Dragonstone to spare him from being sacrificed to R'hllor. He also suggests that Stannis go to the aid of the Night's Watch, which is under attack by wildlings. Stannis later follows this advice, thereby gaining the allegiance of the Watch, many wildlings, and some of the northern lords.[11].

A Feast for Crows

It is reported that Davos was sent to White Harbor to negotiate with Lord Wyman Manderly. Cersei Lannister demands that Lord Wyman execute Davos in exchange for the ransom of his heir.[12] It is then reported that Davos's head and hands now grace the walls of White Harbor.[13]

A Dance with Dragons

Davos sails from Eastwatch at the Wall to represent Stannis and his claim in White Harbor with Salladhor Saan and his fleet of Lyseni sellsails. After a number of storms take their toll on Saan's fleet, Saan abandons Stannis's cause and gives Davos the choice between coming with him to Essos, or leaving in a small row boat. Davos chooses to leave, and eventually washes up on the shores of Sweetsister. After being caught in Sisterton and updated on current events by Lord Godric Borrell at Breakwater, Davos is freed by Godric and continues to White Harbor.[14] He is preceded, however, by envoys of House Frey, who have come from the Twins with the remains of Lord Wyman's younger son, Wendel.[15]

Davos appears before the Merman's Court to present the case for the Manderlys to support Stannis. In the presence of the Freys, Lord Manderly dismisses Davos's pleas and insults him, though his daughter, Wylla Manderly, says that their house should support Stannis, who would get revenge for the wrongs done at the Red Wedding. Lord Manderly has his daughter taken away, then has Davos dragged off to be executed.[1] While awaiting his execution, Davos is imprisoned in the Wolf's Den; in the interrim, Manderly has a lookalike prisoner executed in his place. The prisoner is beheaded, his head dipped in tar and an onion stuffed in his mouth. The fingers of one of his hands are also cut off to resemble Davos's. The head and hands are then put up on spikes on the walls of the city to give the Lannisters and Freys reason to believe in House Manderly's loyalty to the Iron Throne.[16] Once Manderly has sent a false report to the Iron Throne and gotten his son and heir, Ser Wylis Manderly, back, he has Robett Glover free Davos and bring him to the New Castle. He tells Davos that he will swear his allegiance to Stannis if Davos retrieves Rickon Stark from Skagos. Manderly has discovered the boy is alive thanks to the testimony of Wex Pyke, but needs a smuggler to retrieve him from the dangerous isle.[17]

Quotes by Davos

King Stannis is my god. He made me and blessed me with his trust.[3]

Stannis: I know the cost! Last night, gazing into that hearth, I saw things in the flames as well. I saw a king, a crown of fire on his brows, burning ... burning, Davos. His own crown consumed his flesh and turned him into ash. Do you think I need Melisandre to tell me what that means? Or you? If Joffrey should die ... what is the life of one bastard boy against a kingdom?
Davos: Everything.[5]

Stannis Baratheon and Davos

Jared: The Red Wedding was the Young Wolf's work. He changed into a beast before our eyes and tore out the throat of my cousin Jinglebell, a harmless simpleton. He would have slain my lord father too, if Ser Wendel had not put himself in the way.
Davos: Is it your claim that Robb Stark killed Wendel Manderly?
Jared: And many more. Mine own son Tytos was amongst them, and my daughter's husband. When Stark changed into a wolf, his northmen did the same. The mark of the beast was on them all. Wargs birth other wargs with a bite, it is well-known. It was all my brothers and I could do to put them down before they slew us all.
Davos: Ser, may I have your name?
Jared: Ser Jared, of House Frey.
Davos: Jared of House Frey, I name you liar.[1]

Jared Frey and Davos

I am a man. I am kind to my wife, but I have known other women. I have tried to be a father to my sons, to help make them a place in this world. Aye, I’ve broken laws, but I never felt evil until tonight. I would say my parts are mixed, m’lady. Good and bad.[7]

– Davos, to Melisandre

Kings and corpses always draw attendants.[14]
