The Dawn Age, during this period, of indeterminate length, the First Men who arrived from Essos has colonized Westeros.

From the beginning of time, Westeros was populated by the children of the forest, who for time-uncounted lived alone throughout the continent of Westeros, except perhaps for the Giants(and maybe one other race, if the legend of the Seastone Chair on Old Wyk in the Iron Islands is true [1] They worshipped nameless gods of forest and stream and stone. [2] It's unknows how long the children lived alone in Westeros, nor where they themselves came from. the oldest records available only relate to arrival of the First Men to the continent, from eastern continent, about 12,000BAL years ago [3]

The First Men crossed into what in time would be Dorne from the eastern continent, using the land bridge that connected the continents. The First Men brought with them bronze, great leathern shields, the first horses and their own gods. Invading into the lands of the children and cutting down and burning their scared weirwoods to clear land for themselves, leading to a war between the two people.

The wars between the children and the First Men went on for thousand of years. During that time, A hundred kingdoms rose and fell. This was a rugged time where many ancient traditions and legacies forged by the First Men were established. Many of these customs live on among the lords of the North, who still bear the blood of the First Men in their veins. The laws of hospitality, the obligation of a judge to also be the executioner, and the renowned Wall are all accredited to these ancestors of the northmen — even the barrows of the First Men can still be found throughout the North. This was the time when many legendary kings and heroes walked the earth: Brandon the Builder, the Grey King, Serwyn of the Mirror Shield, and so forth.

Eventually the war between the children and the First Men went in the favor of the more numerous, larger, stronger, and more technologically advanced First Men, it's said that during that time the children used powerful magic in a futile attempt to end of the invasion, braking the Arm of Dorne. eventually wise men of both races forged the Pact at the Isle of Faces, marked the end of the Dawn Age and the beginning of the Age of Heroes.
