Dirk is a ranger of the Night's Watch. He takes his name from his favorite weapon, which he silently sharpens every night.[1]

Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
Dirk is part of the Great Ranging, the force that left Castle Black in search of the wildlings. Dirk is one of the conspirators who intend to kill Lord Commander Jeor Mormont and others. His part in the conspiracy is to kill Blane.[1] He is among the survivors of the Battle of the Fist of the First Men who retreat to Craster's Keep. Dirk blames Craster when Bannen dies. After members of the Watch insult their host to the point of his attacking them, he slits Craster's throat, killing him during the mutiny at Craster's Keep.[2]
A Feast for Crows
Dirk remains at Craster's Keep after the betrayal, along with a few other former members of the Night's Watch.[3]
A Dance with Dragons
Dirk and the other betrayers wander in the Haunted Forest, planning to head south over the Wall. However, the traitors are killed by Coldhands and his ravens. Summer, Bran Stark's direwolf, finds the bodies and eats parts of the meat. [4]
