Elia Sand is the oldest bastard daughter of Prince Oberyn Martell by his paramour Ellaria Sand. She is one of the famous 'Sand Snakes'.[4] She's fond of horses and jousting, her weapon of choice is the lance.[2] Elia was most likely named after her late aunt, Elia Martell.

Appearance

Elia wears her hair in a black braid, and has her father's eyes. She often smells like a horse, to her mother's despair.[2]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

After the death of Prince Oberyn, Elia, her mother and six of her seven sisters (Sarella Sand is outside of Dorne) are all taken into custody. While Prince Doran Martell does not think Elia and her younger sisters will be a danger to his rule, he fears they might be used by others in plots.[5] Princess Arianne Martell later mentions to Ser Arys Oakheart that she is not permitted to see her cousins by her father.[6] Elia is sent to the Water Gardens with her mother and three younger sisters where, along with Obella, she becomes the terror of the pools.[7]

A Dance with Dragons

When the head of Ser Gregor Clegane is delivered to Sunspear, Obara, Nymeria and Tyene Sand continue to demand more justice against the Lannisters. Ellaria Sand, Elia's mother, mentions how Elia and Obella worship the elder Sand Snakes, and how Elia and Obella are in turn worshipped by Dorea and Loreza, their younger sisters. She asks the three eldest Sand Snakes that, if they die, whether or not Elia and Obella should seek vengeance for them, and Dorea and Loreza for them in turn.[1]

The Winds of Winter

Elia joins her cousin, Princess Arianne Martell, on her journey to meet with Jon Connington. While traveling on the ship the Peregrine, Joss Hood finds Elia to be too precocious for his liking and states that someone should spank her. Elia both flirts with and challenges him, saying that he must joust her first if he wishes to punish her. While Garibald Shells claims that women should not joust, Elia claims that she is "Lady Lance". Arianne sends her below deck to end the conversation.[2]

Quotes by Elia

I’m Elia. Lady Lance.[2]

Quotes about Elia

Someone needs to spank that child.

- Joss Hood

You may be a lance, but you are no lady.[2]

- Arianne Martell

Oberyn wanted vengeance for Elia. Now the three of you want vengeance for him. I have four daughters, I remind you. Your sisters. My Elia is fourteen, almost a woman. Obella is twelve, on the brink of maiden-hood. They worship you, as Dorea and Loreza worship them. If you should die, must El and Obella seek vengeance for you, then Dorea and Loree for them? Is that how it goes, round and round forever? I ask again, where does it end?[1]
