The First Sword[1] or first sword[2] is the chief protector of the Sealord, the ruler of the Free City of Braavos.

Culture
The First Sword commands the Sealord's guardsmen and protects him in public. The First Sword is often the deadliest of the bravos and water dancers of Braavos.[1]
History
First Swords have participated in a dozen wars and protected numerous Sealords. Some of the most famous duels have involved First Swords.[1]

A Game of Thrones
Syrio Forel, a former first sword, tells Arya Stark that he had been chosen by the Sealord of Braavos because he was the most observant of the bravos, and most able to protect the Sealord from threats seen and unseen.[3]
