Gared was a ranger of the Night's Watch. He joined the Night's Watch as a boy and had spent forty years as a ranger by the beginning of A Song of Ice and Fire. His are the first words of the series: "We should start back. The wildlings are dead."[1]

Physical Description

Gared is described as "old, past fifty." He lost both ears, three toes, and the little finger of his left hand to the cold.[2].

Expedition beyond the Wall

Gared went on an expedition with Will and Ser Waymar Royce, who commanded them. They followed a group of wildling raiders. During the night they caught up with them. Will sneaked near to gather information. He did not see any movement and reported that the wildlings were dead, probably killed by the cold. Gared tried to persuade Royce to head back to the Wall but without luck. The three men went to search the corpses to discover what had killed them. It could not have been the cold, as the Wall was weeping when they left.

Will and Ser Waymar walked the last part while Gared remained with the horses. They could not find the bodies. Will climbed a tree to look for them. Suddenly Ser Waymar was attacked and killed by the Others, a group of supposedly mythical creatures. Will stayed in the trees until he was sure that the Others had left. When Will went down he was attacked and killed by Ser Waymar, who had been turned into an wight.[3]

It is not known how much of this Gared had seen, but he apparently fled south. He did not rejoin his brothers at the Wall and so was seen as a deserter. Gared was arrested south of the Wall outside a small holdfast and later questioned and sentenced to death by Lord Eddard Stark. Also present on the day of his death were Bran, Robb, Jon, Theon Greyjoy, and Jory Cassel. Theon Greyjoy laughed and kicked Gared's head after Gared was beheaded by Ned with the greatsword Ice.[4] Gared's head was sent to Lord Commander Mormont of the Night's Watch.[5]

While Lord Commander Mormont is telling Tyrion Lannister about the conditions on the wall to gain his support, he mentions how he sent Ser Waymar Royce ranging with two of his best men even though Waymar was green. Waymar felt it was his due to have his own command because he was a knight and Mormont gave him the command because he did not want to offend Waymar’s father. Mormont now laments that he was a fool to do this, and his Raven repeats “fool, fool.” The commander then continues that one of the men he sent, Gared, had been on the wall longer than the commander, and he would never have believed that the man would have turned, but Lord Eddard had sent him his head. There had been no word on the other two men. The commander had sent Benjen Stark to search for the men, and now Benjen has also disappeared; there is no one for the commander to send to search for Benjen.[6]

The TV series

In the TV series the roles of Gared and Will are swapped. Gared is beheaded by an Other and Will flies south until he is captured and executed.[7]. Gared is played by Dermot Keaney.[8] See also the Gared on the Game of Thrones wiki.
