Appearance and Character
Before joining the Brotherhood Without Banners, he was a stockier man with a clean-shaven appearance. His time in the Brotherhood hardened him, and he has since grown out his bread and hair and become thinner. He was known to speak boldly.
He is the son of Hullen, the Master of Horse at Winterfell. Harwin often lead Arya Stark's pony around the yard of Winterfell during her youth, rode at quintain with Jon Snow and Robb Stark, and was known for drinking too much on feast days.
He remembers Lyanna Stark's skills at horse-riding and was privy to the rumours of his Lord Eddark Stark and Ashara Dayne's love affair as a young boy no older than Arya, suggesting he has been a stable-boy and guard of Winterfell in the service of House Stark since his youth.
A Game of Thrones
Harwin is among the guardsmen who accompany Lord Eddard when he travels south to assume the office of Hand of the King to Robert I. Like the rest of the Stark household, Harwin does nothing to prevent Sandor Clegane from killing the butcher son Mycah. Arya Stark, remembering how Harwin always speaks so boldly, resents him over his inaction.
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
Harwin is encountered by Arya Stark in the Riverlands, having joined the Brotherhood Without Banners. There he tells her what came of the men that Lord Eddard sent into the Riverlands with Lord Beric Dondarrion. He reveals there are only six of the twenty guardsmen from Winterfell remaining, but they are scattered.
When Arya attempts to escape from the Brotherhood from horseback, Harwin is the only member who is able to keep up with her on horseback, and he eventually catches her. He tells Arya that her skills in horse-riding remind him of her deceased aunt, Lady Lyanna.
Harwin takes part in the engagement with the Brave Companions at the septry. He later attempts to comfort Arya after Edric Dayne tells her of her father's love affair with his deceased aunt, Ashara Dayne, and reveals he too heard the same rumour at Winterfell as a child no older than she was, but that it a irrelevant one.
A Feast for Crows
Harwin is listed as being part of Lady Stoneheart's band of outlaws.
