Ser Harwin Strong, known as Breakbones, was a knight from House Strong and heir to Harrenhal. He also served as a captain in the City Watch of King's Landing. The rumored lover of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Harwin is believed by some to have been the real father of her first three children, (Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon).[2]

Appearance and Character

Harwin was said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms in his day.[3]

History

Ser Harwin was brought to court by his father, Lord Lyonel Strong, alongside his brother Larys and his two sisters.[4]

Princess Rhaenyra granted Harwin her favor at the tourney celebrating her wedding with Ser Laenor Velaryon. At that tourney, Ser Criston Cole broke his collarbone and shattered his elbow. Thereafter the fool Mushroom called him Brokenbones.[3]

When Rhaenyra moved to Dragonstone in 114 AC, Harwin went with her as her personal sworn shield and the leader of the blacks.[5]

Harwin died in a fire at Harrenhal that also killed his father, Lord Lyonel Strong. The fire was blamed on the curse of Harrenhal. Other non-mystical suspects included Prince Daemon Targaryen, whose motive would have been eliminating a rival for Princess Rhaenyra's affections;[3] Lord Corlys Velaryon, as revenge for Harwin cuckolding his son;[3] Harwin's younger brother, Larys, to claim the inheritance of Harrenhal;[3] and King Viserys I Targaryen, to eliminate the man who brought dishonor on his House.[3]

Notes:
  1. Both Grand Maester Munkun and Septon Eustace believed Alys Rivers to have been the bastard daughter of Lord Lyonel Strong.
  2. In 132 AC, Alys claimed to have wed Prince Aemond before his death.
