The heart of the Great Pyramid is located deep within the center of the pyramid. Massive brick walls surround a suite of windowless rooms buried in the very heart of the pyramid on the sixteenth and seventeenth levels. [1] [2] Hizdahr zo Loraq and the cupbearers of Daenerys Targaryen take up residence here during Queen Daenerys Targaryen's absence.

About

King Hizdahr zo Loraq’s chambers in the heart of the pyramid are dark and windowless and surrounded on all sides by brick walls 8 feet thick (2, 44 meters).

The door of the King’s apartments have a slidehole, [2] . A heavy bar bars the door when it is shut. Inside, the apartments are large and luxurious, the floors covered with silk carpets out of Qarth. Great beams of black oak support the high ceilings. [2] On the walls are priceless tapestries, they are ancient and much faded and depict the glory of the Ghiscari Empire. The largest of them show the last survivors of a defeated Valyrian army passing beneath the yoke and being chained. [2]

The archway leading to the royal bedchamber is guarded by a pair of sandalwood lovers, shaped and smoothed and oiled, Ser Barristan Selmy finds them distasteful. [2]. The archway connects the bedchamber with the location intended for the cupbearers and various visitors. An iron brazier is there to give light. There is a bench to sit on and a sideboard where Hizdahr keeps a flagon of wine. He has developed a taste for Arbor gold and sweet red (possibly from The Reach), dismissing Ghiscari wine as “yellow piss". [2]

A thin and nearly-transparent silk curtain stands at the entrance of the archway. It allows a person standing in the archway to examine visitors without stepping outside to meet them, but offers little protection from prying eyes. [2]

Hizdahr keeps two men by him when he sleeps. One on the door of his bedchamber and a second within in an adjoining alcove.

Ser Barristan’s arrest of Hizdahr zo Loraq

After consulting with the Shavepate Ser Barristan Selmy decides take Hizdahr zo Loraq alive by placing him under arrest. That night he dresses in his Queensguard armour and again meets up with the Shavepate 12 levels down from the queen’s apartments. After a brief meeting they go their separate ways. Ser Barristan takes 6 Brazen Beasts with him. He continues his decent to the floors of the king’s apartments.

He finds the doors to the heart of the pyramid shut with a pair of Brazen Beasts posted at the gates. He gives the password: Groleo to the Brazen Beasts; they unlock the chain and let him through. Ser Barristan and his escort step through into a narrow, torch lit servant’s corridor of red and black brick. Their footsteps echo on the floors as they stride past two halls and take the hall to the right.

Outside the carved hardwood doors of the king’s chambers stands guard Steelskin, a young pit fighter. He lets Ser Barristan in but not the Brazen Beasts, they must wait outside.

The interior is dark and windowless; the chambers that the king has made his own are large and luxurious within. Ser Barristan notes his surroundings. An iron brazier gives the only light; beside it are two of the queen’s cupbearers, Miklaz has gone to wake the king, There is a bench intended for waiting visitor at a short distance from the bedchamber, Ser Barristan remains standing, and waiting for the king to emerge.

Eventually Hizdahr zo Loraq emerges from the bedchamber in a green satin robe, underneath he is naked. Ser Barristan is pleased by this, as naked men feel more vulnerable and less inclined to acts of suicidal heroism. He glimpses a naked woman peering through the archway from behind the gauzy curtain. [2] He confronts Hizdahr who denies trying to harm or depose Daenerys.

Ser Barristan eventually unsheathes his sword, causing Hizdahr to shriek for the pit fighter Khrazz who emerges from a door somewhere to Ser Barristan’s left. They do battle and Ser Barristan slays him.

After comforting a sobbing Qezza and cleaning his bloodied sword on a curtain he finds Hizdahr zo Loraq, Fourteenth of His Noble Name, hiding behind a tapestry, whimpering, begging to be spared. Barristan sheaths his sword and arrests Hizdahr, telling him that he will be kept prisioner until the queen returns.
