Hizdahr zo Loraq is a Ghiscari noble of the city of Meereen, he is extremely wealthy and can trace his descent to several notable Ghiscari citizens such as Mazdhan the Magnificent, Hazrak the Handsome and Zharaq the Liberator.[2]

Appearance

He is tall and slender with flawless amber skin, his red black Ghiscari hair was shaped into wings but he eventually shaved them off to please Daenerys.[3]

Recent Events

A Dance with Dragons

After Daenerys Targaryen takes Meereen she had the Fighting pits all closed. Hizdahr bought them all at a reduced price and made several petitions to Daenerys to reopen them.[3] On the seventh petition he brought all the former gladiators, Krazz, Barsena Blackhair, Camarron of the Count, Goghor the Giant, Spotted Cat, Fearless Ithoke and Belaquo Bonebreaker who also begged Daenerys to reopen the pits.[4]

With the Sons of the Harpy continuing to cause trouble in the streets, the High Priestess of Meereen, the Green Grace advised Dany to take a husband of Ghiscari blood to placate the Meereenese and recommended Hizdahr.[5]

Though Dany was reluctant, she asked Hizdahr to bring her ninety days of peace with no more harpy killings before she would consider, and he agreed.[5] He lived up to his end of the bargain and brought Dany the peace she desired, though Skahaz mo Kandaq advised Dany that he must be the one who had given the Sons their orders in the first place or why else would the killings have stopped.[6]

Dany dismissed this however and married him despite the fact she had no desire for him since she was desperate for peace.[6][7] The pits were reopened for a series of bloodsports to celebrate the wedding were held in Daznak's Pit. Dany did not like this but Hizdahr insisted all the fighters volunteered for the arena in a chance to win glory. Hizdahr offered her spiced locusts but she refused. Strong Belwas eagerly ate them instead. During a fight between a boar and a pit fighter, Drogon appeared suddenly over the arena drawn by the stench of blood and noise of the crowd. When Dany disappeared on Drogon's back after running into the arena when Drogon was nearly killed by Harghaz[8] this left Hizdahr a King without his queen. Belwas nearly died from feasting on the locusts, as the spiced locusts were laced with poison.[9]

Hizdahr tried to gain control of Meereen after the disappearance of Daenerys but Grey Worm and his Unsullied refused to obey him and Ser Barristan considers Hizdahr vain and weak. Hizdahr removed Skahaz from command of the Brazen Beasts and appointed his cousin Marghaz zo Loraq over them. He takes up residence in the heart of the Great Pyramid during Daenerys absence. Many of Dany's supporters such as Ser Barristan Selmy and Skahaz later suspect Hizdahr of poisoning the locusts in hopes of getting rid of Dany, since he had offered her the food but did not touch it himself.[9]

When the Yunkai lords along with Bloodbeard presented Hizdahr with the head of Groleo and demanded the deaths of the dragons in return of the Meereen hostages, Hizdahr stated he must ponder their request. Selmy who was present at this parley and had served three kings (Robert, Aerys and Jaehaerys) thought that none of them would have acted as meekly as Hizdahr when presented with such a threat.[1]

The delicate political situation leads Ser Barristan to talk with Skahaz mo Kandaq the Shavepate[1][10] and later with Grey Worm[11]. They captured Hizdahr but Selmy refused to kill him until he was sure Hizdahr was guilty. Since his capture the Sons of the Harpy have resumed their shadow war and Yunkai has continued their siege of Meereen.

It is unknown if Loraq is really the Harpy or just an innocent catspaw.
