House Frey of the Crossing is a noble house of the Riverlands. Their main seat is the Twins, a pair of castles on each bank of the Green Fork of the Trident that serves as a vital bridge across the river. The lord of the house is called the Lord of the Crossing. The strategic location of the Twins has allowed the house to become quite wealthy. Under their current lord, Walder Frey, they have grown greatly in both size and power. One of the most powerful bannermen of the Tullys, the House can field a thousand knights and three thousand foot.
Their sigil is two blue towers united by a bridge on silver-grey, representing the Twins.[1] Their house words are not mentioned in the books. Most current Freys tend to share the weaselly appearance of their common ancestor, Lord Walder.

History
House Frey is one of the younger houses in Westeros, dating back some six centuries when its founder was awarded lands and nobility. The founding Frey had a vision of building a great bridge spanning the Green Fork of the Trident and began its construction. His grandson ultimately finished the bridge's construction and built wooden keeps on both sides as well. Later generations replaced the timber keeps with identical stone keeps that were named the Twins. A large tower was constructed in the middle of the bridge and called the Water Tower.[1]
The Twins' defensible construction and strategic location allowed the Freys to prosper by exacting tolls for passage across the river. The Freys grew into one of the richest and most powerful houses of the Trident. Their quick rise to prominence has caused other powerful houses to look down on them as upstarts. The Freys also became bitter rivals with their neighbors to the north, the crannogmen ruled by House Reed.
House Frey aided Aegon the Conquerer during his War of Conquest and rebelled against Harren the Black of Harrenhal, the King of the Isles and the Rivers.[2] Afterward, the Freys joined the other river lords in swearing fealty to House Tully, the new Lords Paramount of the Trident.
A young Frey was mocked as Fool Frey for asking for the hand of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.[3] During the Dance of the Dragons, House Frey sided with the blacks against the greens. Lord Forrest Frey died fighting westermen in the Battle by the Lakeshore.[4]
Dunk recognized the Frey banner among the arms displayed at the Ashford Tourney.[5] Lord Ambrose Butterwell held the Whitewalls Tourney to celebrate his marriage to his new lady wife who was a member of House Frey. Lord Frey attended the Whitewalls Tourney, accompanied by his daughters, his four-year-old son (the current Lord Walder), his brother, Ser Franklyn Frey, and his nephew. However, the tourney was used as an excuse by some attendees to plot the Second Blackfyre Rebellion.[6]
During the Tourney at Harrenhal, a squire of a member of this house accosted Howland Reed. The knight of House Frey was later defeated by the Knight of the Laughing Tree and told to teach his squire honor.[7]
During the long reign of Lord Walder Frey, the house exploded in size as he and his descendants sired many offspring. Lord Walder claims to have hosted three kings at the Twins during his rule.[1] Under Walder's leadership, the Freys exploited their advantages to the fullest. Despite their influence, the Freys continue to be looked down upon. When Tytos Lannister acquiesced to Lord Walder's proposal to marry his second son, Emmon, to Tytos' daughter Genna the ten-year old Tywin Lannister spoke out against the match. Later, Hoster Tully refused a Frey bride for his son Edmure, and Jon Arryn refused to foster Lord Walder's grandsons at the Eyrie. Lord Walder, however, continued to exploit his leverage, delaying his answer to House Tully's call during Robert's Rebellion, only arriving to the Battle of the Trident once the outcome was already decided.
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
A score of Frey men are at the crossroads inn when Lady Catelyn Tully seizes Tyrion Lannister.[8] Rather than joining her to bring him to justice, the men report the event to Lord Walder Frey.[9]
Six Freys attend the Tourney of the Hand: Ser Jared, Ser Hosteen, Ser Danwell, Ser Emmon, Ser Theo and Ser Perwyn, as well as one of Lord Walder's bastards, Martyn Rivers.[10]
As he had done in Robert's Rebellion, Lord Walder delays his response to Lord Hoster Tully's calling of banners and keeps near 4,000 men at the Twins. Although the House defends their lands from Lannister outriders commanded by Ser Addam Marbrand, they delay declaring for one side or the other in the War of the Five Kings until it serves their purpose. When Robb Stark arrives at the Twins on his march south to free Lord Eddard Stark, he is received by Walder's heir, Ser Stevron. Walder negotiates with Robb's mother, Lady Catelyn, securing a marriage contract with Robb, linking the Freys with the Starks of Winterfell. Furthermore, Arya Stark will wed Elmar when the fighting is done, Catelyn will take two more (Big and Little Walder) as wards, and Robb will take yet another (Olyvar) as his squire. In exchange the Freys lend their swords to his cause and grant the northern army safe passage.[1] Meanwhile, Lord Walder and his heir Ser Stevron have been named among the nobles King Joffrey Baratheon insists must do him homage or be named traitors to the realm. [11]
Robb's army split at the Twins, each force heading to deal with a different Lannister army; Freys ride with both forces. Robb acknowledges that the Freys under Ser Stevron's command fought bravely at the Battle of the Whispering Wood; Ser Perwyn fights there as part of Robb's bodyguard. Cleos and Tion fight on the other side of that battle under their cousin, Ser Jaime Lannister, and are captured along with him. Their father, Emmon Frey, also fights on the Lannister side of the war. Other Freys, including Ser Aenys, Ser Jared, Ser Hosteen, Ser Danwell, Elmar and Ronel Rivers are part of Roose Bolton's army. Jared, Hosteen, Danwell and Ronel are captured by Lord Tywin Lannister's forces during the Battle of the Green Fork. Stevron attends the war council at Riverrun at which Robb Stark is declared King in the North.[12]
A Clash of Kings
Catelyn's wards Big Walder and Little Walder are welcomed to Winterfell, although they are not much to the liking of Bran Stark. They are spared by Theon Greyjoy during his capture of Winterfell and later by Ramsay Snow during his sack of Winterfell.[13][14]
Jared, Hosteen, Danwell and Ronel are briefly in captivity at Harrenhal before being ransomed by two other Freys (presumably Aenys and Elmar) soon after Arya's arrival, rejoining Lord Bolton's army. Many Freys, including Ser Stevron, Ser Ryman, Black Walder, and Olyvar, join Robb in his campaign through the Westerlands. Stevron dies after receiving a minor wound in the Battle of Oxcross, making his son Ryman the heir to the Twins. In the Battle of the Crag, Black Walder scales the walls of the castle along with Smalljon Umber.
Ser Perwyn accompanies Lady Catelyn on her voyage south to treat with kings Renly and Stannis Baratheon. Martyn Rivers commands the outriders in the Riverlands while Brynden Tully is campaigning in the west with Robb Stark, King of the Trident. Martyn meets Catelyn's party when she nears Riverrun on her return trip. After returning to the Riverlands, Perwyn fights in the Battle of the Fords.
Cleos Frey, still a captive of Robb's, is sent to King's Landing to offer King Robb's terms to his cousin, Tyrion Lannister; they are rebuffed. Tyrion plants men in Cleos's guard to try and free Jaime from Riverrun; they fail and Cleos is imprisoned again.
To solidify wartime alliances, Roose Bolton marries one of Walder's granddaughters, Walda. After the fall of Winterfell and the Lannister victory over Stannis in the Battle of the Blackwater, the Freys in Lord Bolton's army at Harrenhal believe that Robb should bend the knee.[15]
A Storm of Swords
At Riverrun, Catelyn frees Jaime from captivity in an effort to exchange him for her daughters, allowing his cousin Cleos Frey to accompany him along with her sworn sword Brienne of Tarth. On the journey to King's Landing, Cleos proves to be a useless fighter, and when he is killed by the Brave Companions he is mourned by none.
Word eventually reaches the Twins of Robb Stark's marriage to Jeyne Westerling instead of a Frey as promised. Ryman Frey, Lord Walder's new heir, withdraws House Frey's support from the King of the North in outrage, with all of the Frey soldiers leaving his army. Later, Lame Lothar and Bastard Walder arrive at Riverrun with 40 men from the Twins. There they make the offer that their liege lord, King Robb's uncle Edmure Tully, stand in Robb's place for the marriage alliance and marry Walder's daughter, Roslin.
However, Walder secretly negotiates with Lords Tywin Lannister and Roose Bolton. They betray the Starks and Tullys at the Red Wedding, breaking guest right and slaughtering their former allies. Jinglebell, Benfrey, and Tytos are killed in the process. Ser Perwyn, Olyvar, and Alesander had been sent away beforehand, they being too friendly with the Starks. The Freys are rewarded by the Iron Throne for killing King Robb and capturing Lord Edmure. Walder Frey's second son, Emmon, is given the lordship of a cadet branch, House Frey of Riverrun, when House Tully is divested of their seat. To solidify the alliance with the Lannisters, Amerei is paired with Lancel Lannister, and Daven Lannister is to wed another Frey.
Black Walder secures the surrender of Seagard by threatening to kill Patrek Mallister, while Ryman and his son Edwyn lead a 2,000-strong Frey force to join Daven Lannister in the Siege of Riverrun, which is promised as the seat of Emmon Frey.
Other nobles and the smallfolk scorn House Frey for breaking the sacred guest right. Petyr and Merrett are seized and hanged by the revived Lady Catelyn and her incarnation of the brotherhood without banners.
A Feast for Crows
House Frey's influence in the Riverlands increases further by way of the newly-created House Lannister of Darry, the household of which is provided by Lord Lancel's wife, Ami. A score of Freys, including Danwell, Arwood, and Marissa, accompany her to Castle Darry. After "the Hound's" attack on Saltpans, Arwood and his kinsmen Harys and Donnel Haigh ride from Darry to investigate, finding Quincy Cox hiding behind his walls.[16]
Dead soldiers bearing the colors of House Frey have washed up on the Quiet Isle. According to the Elder Brother, they are buried next to their enemies of House Darry. It is hinted that the enmity between Frey and Darry is not new, but has significant history.[17]
After arriving at Riverrun, Jaime Lannister removes Ryman from command of the siege, and informs Emmon that although he is granted Riverrun, Emmon has not received overlordship over the Trident, which is held instead by Lord Petyr, head of House Baelish of Harrenhal. When informing the Blackfish of what will happen if he does not surrender, Jaime says he will send the Freys as a second wave, after the other rivermen but before the westermen. On his journey back to the Twins, Ryman too is executed by Lady Stoneheart, the revived Catelyn Stark. Ryman's death leaves his son Edwyn as heir to the Crossing.
According to Queen Cersei Lannister, Lord Wyman Manderly is on the verge of allying himself with the Boltons after he agrees to marry both of his granddaughters to members of House Frey and open his port of White Harbor to Lannister shipping.
A Dance with Dragons
Rhaegar, Jared, and Symond arrive in White Harbor to solidify the alliance between Houses Frey and Manderly. The Manderlys only pretend to accept the peace of King Tommen Baratheon and shortly after their departure the Frey envoys disappear. There are theories about what caused their disappearance.
Big Walder and Little Walder remain squires of Ramsay Bolton at the Dreadfort, Barrowton, and Winterfell. Soon they are joined by 2,000 Frey soldiers under Ser Aenys and Ser Hosteen who march with Lord Roose Bolton to pacify the North. While quartered at Winterfell during a blizzard, tensions rise in Roose's army when the Freys place the blame for their missing envoys on Wyman.[18] A brawl results in the deaths of several men when Wyman insults the Freys after Little Walder is found dead in the snow. To relieve the pressure, Roose sends Aenys and Hosteen as a vanguard against Stannis,[19] who is encamped at a crofters' village in the wolfswood.[20]
The Winds of Winter
The Frey force at Winterfell falls prey to a trap set by Mors Umber outside the walls, killing Aenys.
