House Mallister of Seagard is one of the most prominent noble houses from the riverlands. Seagard is a fortress built to defend the coast against the reavers from the Iron Islands, and dates from before Aegon's Conquest.[1] The Mallisters distrust the ironborn.[2]

Their blazon is a silver eagle displayed, on a purple field.[3][4] Their motto is "Above the rest".[5]

History

Andal Era

The Mallisters conquered most of the Cape of Eagles from the ironborn during the reign of King Torgon Greyiron.[6]

In the century that followed the fall of House Justman, the Mallisters were one of the many river lords who were petty river kings, with House Teague eventually controlling the riverlands.[7]

Lord Petyr Mallister rose against the Storm Kings of House Durrandon, but he had a brief and inglorious reign before his defeat.[7]

Targaryen Era

House Mallister aided House Targaryen during Aegon's Conquest and rebelled against King Harren the Black of Harrenhal.[8]

It is said that Lord Borros Baratheon slew Lord Mallister during the Battle of the Kingsroad.[9]

Ser Desmond Mallister had a great and tragic friendship with Lord Loron Greyjoy.[10]

Lord Lymond Mallister unhorsed Ser Criston Cole at the tourney at Maidenpool to celebrate the accession of King Viserys I Targaryen.[11] Ser Joseth Mallister jousted in the tourney at Ashford Meadow. He was left unconscious in one of the first tilts.[12] Prince Rhaegar Targaryen unhorsed Lord Jason Mallister in a tourney at Storm's End.[13]

Jeffory Mallister was one of the companions of Brandon Stark that were accused of treason and executed by order of King Aerys II Targaryen.[14] During Robert's Rebellion which followed, Lord Jason attended the wedding between Catelyn Tully and Eddard Stark and gave lavish gifts.[15] At the Battle of the Trident, he slew three of Rhaegar's bannermen.[16]

Baratheon Era

During Greyjoy's Rebellion, Lord Jason Mallister slew Rodrik Greyjoy while defending against the storming of Seagard.[1] He took part in the tourney at Lannisport following the rebellion, but he was defeated by the eventual victor, Lord Jorah Mormont.[17]

Will was caught poaching by Mallister freeriders and then sent to the Night's Watch.[18]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Lord Jason Mallister is seen by Catelyn Stark on the road while he is going to the Hand's tourney.[15] Once there, he unhorses Ser Aron Santagar.[16]

After the death of King Robert I Baratheon, Jason is named among the nobles the newly-crowned King Joffrey I Baratheon insists must do him fealty or be named traitors.[19]

The Mallisters join the northern host when Robb Stark rides south from the Twins. Jason's son, Patrek Mallister, is one of the thirty young sons of lords that ride with Robb in the battle in the Whispering Wood and the Battle of the Camps.[20] Meanwhile, Jason holds a subordinate command and captures Ser Gawen Westerling.[21]

A Clash of Kings

Jason and Patrek accompany Theon Greyjoy on their way back to Seagard.[1] Jason commands the defense of four fords during the Battle of the Fords, repulsing all comers.[22]

A Storm of Swords

Lord Jason is among the seven nobles who launch the funeral boat of Lord Hoster Tully at Riverrun.[23]

At Hag's Mire, Jason brings the captain of the Myraham, who breaks the news to the gathered northern and river lords that Balon Greyjoy is dead and Euron Greyjoy has claimed the Seastone Chair. Lord Mallister reports that his fleet at Seagard consists of half a dozen longships and two war galleys. Robb orders him to send two of his warships into the Neck (one carrying Galbart Glover, the other Maege Mormont) to find Greywater Watch.[24]

Ser Denys Mallister is considered a leading contender to become Lord Commander of the Night's Watch after the death of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont.[2] However, he steps aside so that Jon Snow can win.[25]

A Feast for Crows

Black Walder Frey threatens to hang Patrek, a captive from the Red Wedding, unless Lord Jason surrenders Seagard. Jason bends the knee.[26]

Even though they have renewed their fealty to the Iron Throne, House Mallister's banners are noticeably absent from the rivermen force besieging Riverrun, according to Ser Jaime Lannister.[3]

A Dance with Dragons

Lord Jason and his heir, Patrek, are held captive by Freys in their own castle, Seagard.[27]
