Oath of House Reed

House Reeed swears it allegiance to House Stark of Winterfell in a different form than other houses. It is as follows:

“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater. Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you.I swear it by earth and water. I swear it by bronze and iron. “We swear it by ice and fire.”[4]

A Song of Ice and Fire

  • Howland Reed was one of the six companions of Eddard Stark that went with him to the Tower of Joy, and the only one that survived the fight against the three members of Aerys II's Kingsguard. Eddard said that he would not have survived the battle if it were not for Howland Reed.
  • Howland Reed is said to have remained at Greywater's Watch since the end of the war.
  • Although the crannongmen did not join Robb Stark's army, they were instructed to protect the Neck if the Lannisters tried to come up to the North.
  • Howland Reed sent his children Meera and Jojen to Winterfell to represent the family in the harvest feast and renew the oath to the Starks.
  • Meera and Jojen played a significant part in the Starks escape during the fall of Winterfell, and accompanied Bran in his travel to meet the three-eyed crow.
  • Though House Reed has not openly aligned itself with either Roose Bolton or Stannis Baratheon in the conflicts in The North after the War of Five Kings, Roose Bolton does not seem to trust Howland Reed - he traveled in a wagon and with a decoy while in The Neck as a "caution".
  • Galbart Glover and Maege Mormont, as well as a number of Glover and Mormont soldiers, still seem to be at Greywater Watch as of the end of Dance With Dragons.
