The Iron Gate is one of the seven huge gates that surround the huge walls of King's Landing. It is on the northeast wall and connects to the Rosby road heading northeast to Rosby along Blackwater Bay.

History

In the reign of Maegor I Targaryen, the king had his wife, Queen Alys Harroway, tortured to death and executed. Following her death, Alys's body was cut into seven parts and mounted on spikes above each of the seven gates of the city, including the Iron Gate.[1][2]

During the Dance of the Dragons, a massive riot broke out in the city. Ser Medrick Manderly sallied out and restored some order to the area northeast of Aegon's Hill, to the Iron Gate.[3] In the regency of Aegon III, the Hand of the King, Ser Tyland Lannister, ordered the city gates to be strengthened so they could better resist attacks from within the city walls.[4]

Janos Slynt, the commander of the Iron Gate, was promoted by Lord Jon Arryn to commander of the City Watch of King's Landing after the passing of Manly Stokeworth.[5]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Following the death of King Robert I Baratheon and ascension of King Joffrey I Baratheon, travelers are only allowed to depart King's Landing from the Iron Gate or the King's Gate, both of which are manned by red cloaks.[6]

A Clash of Kings

Tyrion Lannister has Shae hidden in a manse near the Iron Gate.[7]

During the Battle of the Blackwater, mobs fight to escape the city at the Iron Gate and the Gate of the Gods. After deserting the battle, Sandor Clegane considers leaving from the Iron Gate.[8]

A Feast for Crows

Jaime Lannister is sent by his sister, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, to inspect the city gates. According to him the Iron Gate's hinges are rusted.[9]
