The Isle of Cedars is a large island that sits astride both Slaver's Bay and the Gulf of Grief.

About

The isle has three ruined cities located upon it, two which are named, Ghozai and Velos.[1] both of which were destroyed by what appears to be a tsunami triggered by the Doom.

It appears not to be populated by people due to the fact the animals have no fear of man. There is pale sand on the shore where the Iron Fleet is anchored. There are no cedars on the island, they were drowned by the Doom 400 years ago. According to Maester Kerwin the Isle of Cedars had once been called “the Isle of a Hundred Battles” but Victarion thinks that “the Isle of Monkeys” would be more apt.[2]

Endless cloudless skies and blazing sun beat down on the heads of the Iron Fleet’s crew and bakes the decks until the boards are hot enough to scorch bare feet. There are storms that seem to come up out of nowhere. The water is a shimmering turquoise close to shore, and farther out a blue so deep that it is almost black.[3]

Flora and Fauna

The hunting is good. There are pigs: the biggest blackest boars that any of the ironborn had ever seen and plenty of squealing piglets in the brush, bold brutes that had no fear of man. They were learning though, the ironborn hunt them, filling up their larders with smoked hams, salted pork, and bacon.

The forests are very green and still, full of twisted trees and queer bright flowers like none the ironborn have ever seen. And there are horrors lurking amongst the broken palaces and shattered statues of drowned Velos, half a league north of the point where the fleet lays at anchor. There are also monkeys on the isle, which become a plague to the Iron Fleet as they infest half the flotilla, even the Iron Victory; they swing from spar to spar and ship to ship.[4]

A Dance with Dragons

Victarion Greyjoy arrives at the isle to join up with the rest of his scattered Iron Fleet who have orders to join up at the southern tip of the Isle. Victarion Greyjoy goes ashore a dozen times. The last time Victorian spends a night ashore his dreams are dark and disturbing and when he wakes his mouth was full of blood. He takes it as a sign from the Drowned God, a warning that if he lingered here too long, he would choke on his own blood.[5] Victorian thinks that with so many drowned men, the Drowned God will be strong at the Isle of Cedars but then wonders if he has it the wrong way round.

When what is left of the Iron Fleet departs the Isle of Cedars the Shark remains, to tell any stragglers that the fleet had gone to Slaver's Bay and to repair; the storms had left her little more than a hulk.[6]
