Ser Jacelyn Bywater was the Commander of the City Watch of King's Landing.
History
Ser Jacelyn fought in the Greyjoy Rebellion, fighting with distinction and earning his knighthood from King Robert I at Pyke. Jacelyn lost his hand at Pyke. He has been captain of the Mud Gate in King's Landing for three years.[1]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Ser Jacelyn began as Captain of the River Gate, but was named Commander of the City Watch by Tyrion Lannister after Tyrion dismissed Janos Slynt.[2][3] He received Ser Cleos Frey when he arrived to give the terms from Robb Stark.[4] Jacelyn obeyed Tyrion orders to seize Tommen Lannister and keep him safe and out of reach of Cersei Lannister. For this he earned Cersei's enmity.[5]
During the Battle of the Blackwater Ser Jacelyn was one of the commanders of the forces sworn to Joffrey I. Although the plan created by Tyrion Lannister succeeded in destroying part of Stannis Baratheon's forces, the better part of his army was able to cross the river assault the gates. When the City Watch armsmen saw Joffrey retreating to the Red Keep they broke. Ser Jacelyn tried to rally them and seemed to succeed but he was killed by broken men.[6]
Appearance
Ser Jacelyn is tall, with a lantern-jaw. He has an iron hand strapped to his right wrist where he lost his hand hence his nickname. He has deep-set eyes and a prominent brow ridge. He has salt and pepper hair. He is considered a brave, honorable, but rigid man.[7]
