The Jade Compendium is a collection of legends and stories from the east. It was written by Colloquo Votar[1][2][3] who travelled east and visited all the lands of the Jade Sea.

About

In our world a compendium is defined as a concise, yet comprehensive compilation of a body of knowledge. The word compendium arrives from the Latin word "compenso", meaning "to weigh together or balance".

Maester Aemon makes reference to the Jade Compendium in speaking to Jon Snow as evidence that Stannis Baratheon is not Azor Ahai. In the Jade Compendium it is written the Azor Ahai's sword Lightbringer glows and is warm to the touch. However, Maester Aemon notices that while Stannis' sword glows, it is cold to the touch.

A Feast for Crows

The Jade Compendium is one of the stack of books that Samwell Tarly brings up from the library beneath Castle Black, along with Dragonkin which Maester Aemon had commanded him to find. [1]

Making his way toward the armory Sam drops both books as he goes to catch Gilly by the arm. After talking with her briefly he goes down on his knees to gather up the books. The Jade Compendium is undamaged but Dragonkin had come open as it fell, and a few pages had gotten muddy.

Sam curses himself for a clumsy oaf as he smoothes the pages down and brushes them off. He delivers the stack of books from the library to Lord Commander Jon Snow in his solar.

Later, before departing the Wall Samwell Tarly overhears Maester Aemon tell Jon Snow that he left a book for him in his chambers, the Jade Compendium written by the Volantene adventurer Colloquo Votar, who traveled east and visited all the lands of the Jade Sea. He tells Jon there is a passage he might find interesting. Samwell Tarly overhears Jon Snow reply that he will be sure to read it.

A Dance with Dragons

Before departing the Wall Maester Aemon tells Jon Snow that he left a book for him in his chambers, the Jade Compendium written by the Volantene adventurer Colloquo Votar, who travelled east and visited all the lands of the Jade Sea. He tells Jon there is a passage he might find interesting.

Later Jon Snow tells Clydas that he looked at the book Maester Aemon left him,

"The pages told of Azor Ahai. Lightbringer was his sword. Tempered with his wife’s blood if Votar can be belived. Thereafter Lightbringer was never cold to the touch, but warm as Nissa Nissa had been warm. In battle the blade burned fiery hot. Once Azor Ahai fought a monster. When he thrust the sword through the belly of the beast, its blood began to boil. Smoke and steam poured from its mouth, its eyes melted and dribbled down its cheeks, and its body burst into flame."
