King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, alternatively King of the Narrow Sea, was a title used by some claimants to the Stepstones in the southern narrow sea.[1]

History

After Prince Daemon Targaryen conquered all but two of the islands in 109 AC during the War for the Stepstones, he declared himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, and Lord Corlys Velaryon placed a crown on his ally's head. The Kingdom of the Three Daughters responded the following year by sending a force led by Racallio Ryndoon.[1] Another of Daemon's opponents was Qoren Martell, Prince of Dorne.[2]

Daemon returned to King's Landing in 111 AC to attend a tourney celebrating the fifth anniversary of the marriage between his brother, King Viserys I Targaryen, and Queen Alicent Hightower. Daemon offered his crown to Viserys in homage and reconciliation. Daemon returned to the Stepstones after half a year, however, after again quarreling with his royal brother.[1] Daemon abandoned the Stepstones after the death of his estranged wife, Lady Rhea Royce, in 115 AC, but he failed to claim Rhea's lands at Runestone. Tired of the Stepstones, Daemon instead wed Corlys's daughter, Laena Velaryon, at Driftmark.[1]

Five men would follow Daemon as Kings of the Narrow Sea before the short-lived kingdom collapsed.[1] Ser Otto Hightower offered to cede the Stepstones to the Triarchy during the Dance of the Dragons, although the islands had never been claimed by the Iron Throne.[2]

When the Daughters' War broke out among the Triarchy after the death of Sharako Lohar in 131 AC, Tyrosh sent Racallio Ryndoon to conquer the Stepstones. The captain-general slew the reigning King of the Narrow Sea, only to then claim the title himself.[3] After Lord Alyn Velaryon defeated the Braavosi fleet at the Stepstones in 133 AC, Lord Manfryd Mooton was sent to Braavos to negotiate with the Sealord. Braavos agreed to end its support of Racallio and to cede the Stepstones to the Iron Throne, although the islands were still occupied by Racallio and Pentos.[4] "Queen" Racallio was at his greatest strength in 133 AC,[5] but he fled for the Basilisk Isles the following year.[6] At that time Dornishmen occupied most of the Stepstones for Princess Aliandra Martell.[6]
