Lord Commander is the title held by the most senior sworn brother of the Kingsguard,[1] Queensguard,[2] and Rainbow Guard.[3] The Lord Commander is appointed by the King of the Seven Kingdoms, generally from the existing pool of the Kingsguard. He is a member of the small council.

History
Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander for King Viserys I Targaryen, disobeyed the king's will and crowned Aegon II Targaryen instead of Rhaenyra Targaryen, beginning the Dance of the Dragons.[4]
Ser Gerold Hightower, the leader of King Aerys II Targaryen's Kingsguard, was slain at the tower of joy during Robert's Rebellion.[5]

Following the death of King Robert I Baratheon, the new king, Joffrey I Baratheon, dismisses Lord Commander Ser Barristan Selmy and replaces him with Ser Jaime Lannister.[6]
