The Lord of Stokeworth and Lady of Stokeworth are titles given to the head of House Stokeworth of Stokeworth.[1]

History

Lord Alyn Stokeworth was named Hand of the King by King Aegon I Targaryen in 34 AC. He was assigned the task over overseeing the construction of the Red Keep in 35 AC.[2][3] In 37 AC, Lord Alyn was slain in battle by a bandit outlaw known as Harren the Red.[2][4]

During the reign of King Maegor I Targaryen, Lord Stokeworth was one of the few lords to remain loyal to Maegor near the end of his reign.[5] After Maegor's death, he fled back to his castle.[6] He later traveled to Dragonstone, to speak with Maegor's successor, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[7]

During the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen, Lord Stokeworth swore to defend the succession rights of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. In 129 AC, during the Dance of the Dragons in which Rhaenyra's brother Aegon II Targaryen challenged her rule by claiming Viserys's throne for himself, Lord Stokeworth was arrested by Aegon II's supporters. When given the choice between swearing his allegiance to Aegon II or dying, Lord Stokeworth pledged his support to Aegon II.[8] When Ser Criston Cole marched from King's Landing to attack Duskendale and ultimately Rook's Rest, he passed by Rosby and Stokeworth to command both lords to prove their loyalty by joining his attack.[8] When King's Landing fell to Queen Rhaenyra during 130 AC, Lord Stokeworth attempted to switch his allegiance again. Queen Rhaenyra refused him, however, and ordered his tongue removed, after which he was executed. Following Lord Stokeworth's death, Prince Daemon Targaryen suggested marrying Stokeworth's young daughter to Ulf White, to grant White the Stokeworth lands. Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Hand of the Queen, argued instead in favor of Stokeworth's younger son. According to Lord Corlys, disinheriting the younger son in favor of the older daughters would call into question the rights of multiple other lords, who had elder sisters whose claims might suddenly be seen as superior. Unwilling to lose the support of such lords, according to Grand Maester Munkun, Rhaenyra eventually named Stokeworth's son as the new Lord of Stokeworth.[9]

When Aegon II's forces retook King's Landing, Lord Borros Baratheon marched on Stokeworth, the young Lord of Stokeworth, through his steward and castellan, was brought to King's Landing in chain to swear obeisance before Aegon II, and was only allowed to leave after agreeing to pay a heavy ransom and provide suitable hostages to the Iron Throne.[10]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Lady Tanda Stokeworth, the reigning Lady of Stokeworth, resides at King's Landing with her two daughters, Falyse and Lollys.[11]

A Clash of Kings

Lady Tanda Stokeworth is present with her daughters when Myrcella Baratheon departs for Dorne. During the riot that breaks out as they return to the castle, her daughter Lollys is knocked off her saddle, and is raped by half a hundred men,[12] resulting in a pregnancy.[13] Tanda and her daughters reside in Maegor's Holdfast during the Battle of the Blackwater.[14] In the days after the battle, they attend the ceremony where King Joffrey I Baratheon is betrothed to Lady Margaery Tyrell.[15]

A Storm of Swords

Lady Tanda offers Lollys to Lord Tywin Lannister as a possible wife for Tyrion Lannister.[16] She gives a pair of supple riding boots to King Joffrey I Baratheon as a wedding present.[17] She flees from the Red Keep when Joffrey chokes to death at his wedding feast.[17][18]

A Feast for Crows

Lady Tanda's hip is shattered from a fall off her horse. After a failed attempt to murder Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, Lollys's husband, Tanda's heir Falyse is forced to leave the castle while her husband, Ser Balman Byrch, is killed.[19][20] When Lady Tanda dies of a chill, Lollys succeeds Tanda as Lady of Stokeworth, with Bronn as her lord.[21]
