Mace is handsome and a once-powerful-looking man, but has since turned to fat.[2] He has curly brown hair and cuts his beard into a triangular shape that has white spots within it.[3]
Mace is a prematurely old and tedious man lacking in political savvy. His sole military accomplishment was the Siege of Storm's End. Though he has tried to use the Battle of Ashford as evidence of strategic brilliance, he actually had little to do with the fighting as the battle was won by his vanguard, led by Randyll Tarly, before his main force entered the field.
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Mace has always dreamed of his daughter being a queen. He supports Renly Baratheon and Loras Tyrell when they present a plan to crown Renly and have him wed Margaery Tyrell, becoming Hand of the King to Renly. However, King Renly is slain at Storm's End before consummating the marriage. Mace responds by moving his army to Bitterbridge to plan his next move with his sons. They are joined by Petyr Baelish, who offers an alliance between him, King Joffrey Baratheon and House Lannister, including a marriage to King Joffrey and Renly's widow, Margaery. He joins Tywin Lannister's army to march on and defeat Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater; there he commands the host's left.[4] His reward is a seat on the small council as Master of Ships.[2]
A Storm of Swords
After the Battle of the Blackwater, the victorious great lords meet to divide the spoils, of which Mace is granted the lands of House Florent for his second son, Garlan Tyrell.[5]
As a wedding gift, Mace gives King Joffrey a seven-sided chalice decorated with great houses: ruby lion, emerald rose, onyx stag, silver trout, blue jade falcon, opal sun, and pearl direwolf.[6]
Mace serves as one of the three judges at the trial of Tyrion Lannister for the murder of Joffrey. He wants Tyrion dead because his daughter was drinking from the chalice that contained the poison that killed Joffrey. Unbeknownst to Mace it was his mother Olenna Tyrell who poisoned Joffrey.
A Feast for Crows
Mace is charged by Queen Regent Cersei Lannister with the capture of Storm's End in order to remove him from King's Landing. With Mace gone Cersei plots against his daughter, Margaery. Reciprocal accusations of immorality leads to the imprisonment of both Margaery and Cersei by the Faith of the Seven. When Mace receives news of this he leaves the siege and marches his army back to King's Landing, leaving Lord Mathis Rowan to continue the siege with fewer men.
A Dance with Dragons
Mace arrives at King's Landing to find that Margaery and her cousins have already been released. Given the weak evidence against them they were turned over to the custody of his bannerman Randyll Tarly, whose army reached the city first. Their release was conditional on Tarly's holy oath to return them for trial. Cersei Lannister is stripped of the regency. Ser Kevan Lannister arrives in the city and is made Regent to King Tommen Baratheon.
To placate House Tyrell following Cersei's accusations, Kevan makes multiple concessions to Mace. He names Mace the Hand of the King, a title Mace had desired since Tywin's death. Kevan also appoints two of Mace's bannermen, Randyll Tarly and Paxter Redwyne, to the small council. Despite numerous threats facing the Iron Throne, Mace refuses to march his army from the city before his daughter is acquitted. Kevan grows increasingly resentful of Mace's apparent insatiability. Mace adds a hundred men of the Reach to the City Watch and plans a new Tower of the Hand double the size of its predecessor.
Quotes by Mace
Is there anything as pointless as a king without a kingdom? No, it’s plain, the boy must abandon the riverlands, join his forces to Roose Bolton’s once more, and throw all his strength against Moat Cailin. That is what I would do.[3]
- Mace to Joffrey Baratheon's small council
What victories has he ever won that we should fear him? He could have ended Robert's Rebellion at Stoney Sept. He failed. Just as the Golden Company has always failed. Some may rush to join them, aye. The realm is well rid of such fools.[7]

Quotes about Mace
He has a prodigious appetite, this one.[3]
- Tyrion Lannister's thoughts
Robb Stark had won more battles in a year than the Lord of Highgarden had in twenty.[3]
- Tyrion Lannister's thoughts
His sigil ought to be a fat man sitting on his arse.[8]
- Cersei Lannister's thoughts
The more I give him, the more he wants.[7]
