Character and Appearance

Lord Myles was famed for his courage, his face and body bore the scars of dozens of savage battles. He was greatly respected and admired and was described as being a fine, fierce and leal man.

History

Lord Myles was a famed warrior, he rode beside the Hand of the King, Lord Alyn Stokeworth when he was hunting for the outlaw, Harren the Red, He faced Wat the Hewer in single combat in the battle at Stonebridge during the Faith Militant uprising and Lord Myles fought on the side of Prince Aegon the Uncrowned in the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye against Maegor the Cruel.[1]

In 54 AC during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, a new Hand of the King was required after the resignation of Lord Daemon Velaryon from the office. It was thought desirable by the small council that the Hand should be an older man, whose experience would balance the King's youth. As the council already had several men who were considered bookish, a warrior was wanted, a man blooded and tested in battle whose martial reputation would instils fear in the Crowns enemies. After a dozen names were put forward and dismissed, Lord Smallwood named was put forth. [1]

Jaehaerys agreed to the choice when both Ser Willam the Wasp of his Kingsguard who prior to joining the order served Lord Myles at Acorn Hall and had nothing but high praise for the man, as did Prentys Tully of Riverrun and his lady wife. A raven was sent and within a fortnight , Lord Myles arrived in King's Landing and was named Hand of the King.[1]

Myles was made Hand of the King on account of his famous courage, but turned out to be a disaster as Hand.[2]

A Storm of Swords

On Dragonstone Davos Seaworth, now Hand of the King to Stannis Baratheon, is concerned that he has risen to high due to his humble origins. He tells Maester Pylos that a king's Hand should be a highborn lord who is wise and learned, a battle commander or a great knight. Pylos reminds Davos of Myles Smallwood, who had been renowned for his courage but failed as Hand.[2]
