Nymeria leads her army to Dorne.
Art by Roman Papsuev

Nymeria was a warrior queen and a Princess of the Rhoynar. After the Rhoyne was conquered by Valyria, Nymeria led the Rhoynar to Dorne, where she took Lord Mors Martell as her husband. House Nymeros Martell has ruled Dorne since.

History

Nymeria ruled in Ny Sar, where she had a palace.[1] When the Valyrian Freehold conquered the Rhoyne with their dragons, Nymeria led the surviving Rhoynar into exile from Essos. For a time Nymeria and her refugees lived on Abulu, one of the Summer Islands now known as the Isle of Women.[2]

The warrior queen then brought ten thousand ships across the narrow sea to the shores of Dorne in southern Westeros.[3] She struck an alliance with House Martell of Sunspear, taking Lord Mors as her husband and burning the Rhoynar fleet.[4][5] The Martell-Rhoynar alliance conquered the rest of Dorne.[6] Nymeria sent six defeated Dornish kings to join the Night's Watch.[7]

Nymeria's life inspired the books Ten Thousand Ships and The Loves of Queen Nymeria.[8]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Looking into the night sky of Dorne, Princess Arianne Martell thinks of a bright white star as Nymeria's star and a milky band behind it as her ten thousand ships.[9]

When Arya Stark and the kindly man devise an origin for "Cat", Arya chooses the name Nymeria for the ship which brought her to Braavos.[10]

Quotes

That is Nymeria’s star, burning bright, and that milky band behind her, those are ten thousand ships. She burned as bright as any man, and so shall I.[9]

Arianne Martell's thoughts

Nymeria’s blood is in me, along with that of Mors Martell, the Dornish lord she married.[9]

Arianne Martell

We will build ten thousand ships as Nymeria once did and take sail with all our people to the land beyond the sunset.[11]
