The Purple Wedding is the fan-given nickname for the wedding between King Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell that took place on the first day of the new century, 300 AC. The wedding was a lavish affair, but ended in disarray when the King Joffrey drank a chalice of wine that was poisoned with the Strangler and died quickly. The murder was a murky plot organized by the Tyrells and Petyr Baelish, but Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark were falsely implicated. Unlike the Red Wedding, this wedding is not called so in the books.

Background

After House Tyrell allied itself to his reign, Joffrey discarded Sansa and is betrothed to be married to Margaery Tyrell. Olenna Tyrell question Sansa on Joffrey to see if the stories of Joffrey's cruelty were true.

Wedding Feast

The Wedding took place on the first day of the new Century. The feast took place in the Throne Room. Tyrion was seated several seats away from the other Lannister attendees along with Sansa. His grandfather, Tywin Lannister gives him a Valyrian steel sword as a wedding present, which Joff declares he will name Widow's Wail. The present from Tyrion and Sansa is a rare book, "Lives of Four Kings" which Joff destroys, by slicing it up with his new sword, demanding a better present from Tyrion and Sansa. Joff swings it at Balon Swann. When Addam Marbrand warns Joff to be careful, since the blade is Valyrian steel, Joff boasts that he is no stranger to Valaryian steel. Joffrey, while drunk, continually attempts to provoke his uncle, at one instance, he empties the large Royal chalice of wine over Tyrion. The ceremonial pie is served, and cut by Ilyn Payne.

During the feast, Joff's wine is poisoned, after drinking wine continually from the Wedding Chalice, and eating several handfuls of the pie, Joffrey begins to cough, each one more violent than the last. Chaos descends on the Throne room as guests struggle to get out Garlan Tyrellnd Ser Meryn Trant run to the aid of Joffrey while the entire court looked on. Joffrey points at Tyrion before dying. Aftermath

Joffrey, with the exception of his mother, was not particularly mourned by anyone; even his true father Jaime Lannister felt that Joffrey deserved his fate. Tyrion Lannister stated that Joffrey would have become a worse king than the Mad King. Arys Oakheart even thought that the only good thing that could be said of Joffrey was that he was tall and strong for his age.
